Tucson, Ariz (November, 28th 2010) Taking the lead at the drop of the green flag, Terry Phillips of Springfield, MO held off a hard charging RC Whitwell Sunday afternoon for his second Wes Hurst Memorial win. After turning the trick on Saturday to earn the outside front row starting spot, Phillips endured through the 12-caution, hour-long 50-lap marathon for a hard earned $15,000 payday.
As numerous contenders fell by the wayside, Phillips was left to out duel 2010 USA Raceway track champion RC Whitwell, who started eight and used a series of early double file restarts to latch himself too Phillips rear deck just 10-laps in. Whitwell would take the lead on lap 17 only to have the move negated by a yellow before the lap could be completed.
The four biggest movers on the day were Bumper Jones, Tim Donlinger, Curt Barnett and Tim Ward. Jones and Donlinger would each transfer to the "A" coming through the "C" and "B" mains to score third and fifth place finishes respectively. Meanwhile, Barnett had even more work to-do having to qualify for the "C" from a Last Chance race before ultimately landing a tenth. Ward transferred from the "B" and after starting alongside Barnett in 22nd came home with an impressive eighth place run.
As Phillips and Whitwell continued to lead past the halfway point, Kelly Shryock was backsliding from fourth to eleventh trying to make ground on the unoccupied highside of the slicked over 3/8th mile oval. The best battle on the racetrack was taking place between polesittler Ryan Gustin and Rodney Sanders. Sanders, looking for this third big money payday of the season and running as far back as tenth, rallied to take fourth from Gustin on the races final restart on lap 37.
Jones would mount several challenges on Whitwell, repeatedly sticking his nose to the inside trying open a door to the runner-up position. Each attempted was thwarted when Whitwell scrambled back into the preferred low-line after slipping slightly out of the grove.
After the final caution for teammate Jeremy Payne with 13-laps to go, Phillips eased away out front to capture the nations largest Dirt Modified winners purse, and $10,000 more than his first Wes Hurst Memorial win in 2008.
