Terry Phillips took the World Dirt Racing League win at Lakeside Speedway. It was night two of the Late Model Shootout. The WDRL points battle tightens to one point with only one points night left on the 2008 schedule.
Terry Phillips started sixteen for the fifty-lap $5,000 to win WDRL A-Main. Phillips work the lowside of the speedway to work his way to the front. He caught race leader Alan Vaughn and battled through lapped traffic with Vaughn. The two swapped the lead a few times before Phillips would come out on the point, and he would repeat as the winner of the Saturday version of the Late Model Shootout at Lakeside Speedway.
Chad Simpson rolled out of staging in the seventh starting spot. Simpson found himself racing in the back half of the top ten through the early portion of the race. As the race wound down, Simpson found himself rolling towards the front. Working the highside to perfection, he was able to work up to second place, but ran out of time to track down the leader before race-end.
Alan Vaughn ran in the top five all night. Vaughn worked past early race leader Frank Heckenast Jr. Eventual Phillips would find his way around Vaughn. Simpson would get by in the closing laps as Vaughn held on for third.
John Anderson spent most of his fifty laps in heavy traffic just outside the top five. Anderson finally work his way through that flock of cars to take home a fourth place finish.
WDRL Points leader John Kaanta came from eleventh to round out the top five. Leaving Lakeside, and with only one points night left on the schedule, Kanata holds onto a one point lead of Chad Simpson.
The one-point point battle will unfold October 3 & 4, 2008 during the $10,000 Govoner's Cup at the Davenport Speedway (Davenport, IA). Friday night will feature Iowa-Illinois Taylor Insulation Group Qualifying, CrashedToys.com Heat Races, and the IITI Pole Dash. Saturday night race fans will see the last chance races and the 60-Lap Govoner's Cup feature event.
