Inside Line Promotions NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. (July 22, 2014) Tyler Thomas worked his way onto another podium last Saturday at New Smyrna Speedway.
Thomas earned his third podium result in as many pro late model starts on pavement this season for Tim Russell. However, this was his toughest test of the year.
We qualified eighth, Thomas said. They draw a pill for the inversion and they drew a four, so it was only a top-four invert.
That lined him up on the outside of the fourth row for the 50-lap feature.
There the outside line on the starts is the preferred line, he said. We jumped to sixth on the first lap and we had a 30-lap green-flag run. We kinda stayed in sixth the whole time. The leader checked out and the rest of us were right there racing. We had a yellow and right on the restart we went from sixth to battling for third. We were side by side for a couple of laps. I never cleared the guy for third and we fell to fourth right before the next yellow.
That benefitted Thomas, who used the outside lane to power from fourth to second on the restart.
I gave it all I had the last 10 or 15 laps to figure out a way around the leader, he said. We were a little bit loose so I couldnt be as aggressive as Id like to have been. It was still good. The car was working really good. I was pretty happy with it.
Thomas ended with the runner-up result, which was his 11[sup]th[/sup] top five of the year. His next pavement race is scheduled for Aug. 9 at New Smyrna Speedway.
This weekend Thomas will drive for Hans Lein at the Badger Midget Auto Racing Association doubleheader in Wisconsin. Thomas will race on Saturday at Wilmot Raceway in Wilmot and on Sunday at Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie.
