anyone ever had a after market timing pointer?i have an adjustable one and dont know in which position would be zero.any help would be appreciated.

You need to get #1 piston to true top dead center and align you pointer with the mark on the damper. There is no other way to do it accurately, that is the point of the adjustable pointer. All dampers are a little different. If you just want to get close, use one of the stamped timing tabs, but remember 1 or 2 degrees can be alot on a race engine.

Yes. Roll it over till you see the exhaust lobe on #1 cylinder go all the way down(push on the pushrod a little..to be sure...then..just tap the breaker bar a little more and you will be darn close. I usually nowadays just do that..run it and check plugs. Run it hard in a garage for 15 minutes then pull the plugs. If she is way off..you will see the plugs tell the story. 1 or 2 degrees is alot as well. That can really only be dwindled down by running it and watching engine and exhaust temp's.

another question.i have a msd box and distributor.if i take it to about 2500 rpm it goes to likie 50 or 60 degrees timing.at an idle its at like 38 degrees.is there a special way i need to time this thing?

We only use the mechanical advance with full timing by 3000 then bring the engine up to about 3500 and set it at 36 degrees. This makes sure you have full timing in the engine and will still start easy.

change the springs in the top of the dist. located under the cap. MSD sends the dist. out with heavy springs on the advance weights, I run a lt. blue and a small silver (not the heavy silver spring) this will give you total advance at around 2500 rpms.

If this is for a dirt-track application you may want to lock your timing down. (No mechanical advance at all) Set your timing and it is what it is throughout the RPM range.

It’s very easy to lock your timing with a MSD distributor. Take the springs and counter weights off… Knock the roll-pin out of the cam gear (all the way though.) … Lift the top of the distributor up a couple inches… Rotate 180 degrees and push it back down. … On a MSD distributor there’s tab’s or tangs that it will slot back into. … Put the cam gear back on the shaft and you good to go.

I always set all my timing related settings when I degree in the cam. Thats also a good time to mark your dampner every 90 degrees if it's not already marked. I will usually mark the 35 deg btdc on the dampner if it's not marked also.

Thanks, Don WCRE
