During a press conference at Atlanta Motor Speedway, a visibly shaken Stewart said, "This has been one of the toughest tragedies I've ever had to deal with. This is something I'll have to deal with forever. It's a sadness and a pain that I hope no one has to deal with in their life."
Stewart also addressed Ward's family, saying that he wanted them to know that he was thinking of them and praying for them.
"I've taken the past couple of weeks off out of respect for Kevin and his family, and to cope with the accident in my own way."
Stewart declined to answer questions following the statement, saying, "I need to respect the ongoing investigation. Emotionally, I'm not sure I could answer [the questions] anyway."
