April 11th through 13th, 2003

With a 26 night racing season that surpasses all that have ever been scheduled on the historic, 67 year-old half-mile dirt oval, Sedalia’s State Fair Speedway, it was decided to have a complete, action packed weekend to launch the summer–long campaign of top motorsports competition. This past Friday, Saturday and Sunday it did just that….and in spades.

<table align="left" width="400" cellpadding="4" cellspacing="0" border="0" bgcolor="#606096"><tr><td align="left" valign="top"><img src="http://www.stlouisracing.com/pixs03/statefair/Stewart-tools-to-victory....jpg" width="400" border="1"><br><font size="1" color="white"></font></td></tr></table>

The complete weekend was started with action on the racing surface itself for the very best in open-wheeled, dirt track racing on Friday night; the O’Reilly Auto Parts World of Outlaws/Winged Outlaw Warriors 360 touring sprint cars. The most exciting sprint series available was highly spiked with several additional, and very exciting, spiffs.

With a pit-full of 65 sprinters, NASCAR’s 2002 Winston Cup champion Tony Stewart picked up a W.O.W. ride from his own sponsored and 2001 WoO champ Danny ‘the dude’ Lasoski and roared into the lead with two laps to go to win the feature event before a screaming, full-house crowd. In addition, home-town favorite ‘the dude’ battled throughout the entire WoO feature with Steve Kinser. It was not only to win the race, but was also a ‘built-in’ points battle. Lasoski pulled into the SSFS pits with a mere 8 point leader over Kinser. ‘The King’ ran against the cushion in a first time show for his new car, and won by only two car lengths to add a few points marks on Danny, who finished second. The next night at I-55 Speedway in Missouri, Kinser won yet again, and is now 4 tallies ahead of Lasoski in the points scramble.

“PIT-SIDE ASIDES”:

It ‘s always exciting to see many now retired sprint car chauffeurs that usually always show up at the ‘big’ sprint events, including, who else, Bill Utz, Bill “Candy Man” Curtis, father and son racing team Dick and Rick Howard plus long time A.J. Foyt pitman and mechanic Cecil Taylor. All three of the Kinser-racer generations were there; Steve of course, his son also competing in the ‘11k’, Kraig Kinser, who cut fast time with a scalding 16.327. The patriarch of the bunch, Bob Kinser, who ran sprints for 47 years and retired from competition 7 years ago, was on hand to more or less take in the entire scene. Also working the show after being involved in sprint racing for a long time but still active were press ace Larry Hol, Larry and Pat Patterson, former long-time car owner Chuck Greenway plus all time ‘king’ of sprint-car videotaping, Greg Stephens.

The WOW organization produced 36, top quality machines to compete, and you could tell that they were going ‘full-bore’ in the opener for their seasonal tour; constantly ‘pedal to the metal’. Several crashes and spectacular flips took place, luckily with no drivers injured. Edgerton, Ks’ pilot Mitchell ‘motor man’ Moore really had a bad night. He didn’t flip once,... but twice! His front axle broke going into turn one during his heat, slammed the wall and then rolled over. In the ‘B’ feature he was hustling to the front when he hit the wall in turn three and went end for end ‘out of the park’. Some observers say he was as high as 20 feet at times. “What a bad start to the year,” the uninjured Mitchell said as the demolished car was towed back to the pits. “I thought I had room to go to the outside in three, but the car more or less went straight. The car was working really well, too. I hope I have this kind of situation over and done with for the year. ” The WOW’s are scheduled to appear four times at SSFS this year.

SHOW ‘EM ON SATURDAY, RUN ‘EM ON SUNDAY!

Now becoming a yearly happening, David Malmo Motors Ltd./Mitsubishi Race Car Show took place on Saturday from noon until 5 pm in the dealer’s massive lot. Food was available for the fans and visitors and most of the ‘top dogs’ at Sedalia during the ‘Miller Light Summer Shootout Series” were on hand to show their competitive machines before the fresh, unscratched cars were put to work the following day during the ‘Test and Tune’ session on the track Sunday.

There was a full line of racers from turn 4 to turn 1 on Sunday, and many fans in the stands. ‘Jim Raysick Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep/GMC Opening’ night two weeks away on April 25th, included past champion Jason ‘the hammer’ Bodenhamer, who will be running every Friday night at the historic track this year, Sedalia’s native Larry ’the man from Lawson’ Clawson, sophomore driver Kevin Kaiser with an all-new, Ince racer with fresh driver’s uniform to boot, Chad Clark, T.J. Kuykendal and Bob ’D.A.R.E.’ Hiller.

Top runners in the “Third National Bank Modifieds” were headed by Curt Potter, Buddy Thompson, Rick Kimberling, Chad Richwine and Marty Pope.

The ‘David Malmo Motors Inc./Malmo Mitsubishi Street Stocks’ saw a pair of SSFS champions getting set for the season. Last year’s champ Bobby Tevis and 2001 champion Bobby Shane ran close together all day while Richard Fields, Gary Hemme, Kevin Prall and Kelly Braun were but of few of the ‘streeters’ that zipped lap after lap around the half-miler.

“PIT-SIDE ASIDES’:

Long time track manicurist Bob Ramey did an excellent job of keeping the track in good shape even though the hundreds of laps were run in hot and sunny conditions. The dust, even toward the end, stayed at a minimum.
Besides the “Miller Light Summer Shootout Series” divisions, the Midwest Sprint Car Series (MSCS) open-wheeled machines had quite a few on hand, including second in the organizational points last year, Mike ‘slick’ Boyer. They’ll be running five times throughout this SSFS’ season.
It was ‘really cool’ to see a ‘real deal, real steel’ 1950’s coupe racer running on the big half piloted by Odessa’s Mickey Fleehart. It’s a 1946 Ford coupe powered by a 350 c.i. Chevy, four barrel carburetor. “I’ve never run on a half mile before, so I thought I’d give it a try”, Fleehart explained. Mickey skirmished on the track with the street stocks.
A relatively new announcer, at least to SSFS, will take the reigns of being the play by play Weld Racing Control Tower narrator; Terry Dollinger.

All fans will definitely want to attend the season opener on Friday night, April 25th. Not only will the top three classes be strong and excellent in count, but a special ’first-night’ admission price will be SSFS’ way of letting the fans know just how much they appreciate their support. Adults will be admitted for $5, while ages 5 through 15 will be admitted for a single dollar bill.
