O'Reilly NARA Battle of the Bluegrass DirtCar Series
Saturday Night, June 19, 2004
Barren County Speedway-Glasgow, KY

GLASGOW, KY-Before one of the largest crowds in several years at the Barren County Speedway, Tyrel Todd of Eubank, KY took the lead from Terry English with five laps to go and then went on to capture the O'Reilly NARA Battle of the Bluegrass DirtCar Series presented by Arizona Sports Shirts "Wayne Coakley Memorial Race" on Saturday Night. It was Todd's third series win of the season and his second in a row as the 22 year old driver took the Lucas Oil A-Main event behind the wheel of the Todd Family Motorsports, Pulaski Steel and Supply, Todd Truss Company, Gerald’s Auto Parts, Alexander Recycling Inc, Valley View Car Wash, WFO Decals, American Racer Tires, Mike Bullock Racing Engines, MasterSbilt Monte Carlo #14. English of Benton, KY would have his best career BoB finish taking second in the AAA Fence/Pro Power Engines/C.J. Rayburn Monte Carlo.. Finishing in third was Aaron Hatton of Mt Sterling, KY in the Hatton Racing/Porter Tire Center/MasterSbilt Grand Prix. Taking fourth place was point’s leader Greg Johnson in the Double D Motorsports/R&P Industrial Chimney/C.J. Rayburn Grand Prix with fifth going to Victor Lee of Stanford, KY driving the Anthony Ferguson Racing/Three Rivers Material Inc/C.J. Rayburn Grand Prix. In a special post race note winner Tyrel Todd presented the widow of the late Wayne Coakley, Donna Coakley, the winning trophy.

Terry English would get to the front quickly as on the very first lap of the 40 lap main event he darted from his third starting spot to grab the lead from the get go. Greg Johnson would fall in second ahead of Tyrel Todd and Victor Lee. English would start to open up some breathing distance between himself and Johnson as Todd was starting to put the heat on Johnson for the runner-up spot. English started moving into lapped traffic by the ninth circuit with Johnson, Todd and Lee starting to pick up the pace and closing down the advantage that English had built up. Todd would finally get the chance he was waiting for as he slipped by Johnson for second on the 19th lap. As the leaders went halfway (20 laps) English was still in front with Todd running in second followed by Johnson, Aaron Hatton and Lee with John Gill coming up from his 13th starting spot to be just outside the top five as he was now running in sixth place.

Just past the halfway point of the race the first caution came out for a three car wreck in turn four. On the restart English would be on the point with a double file restarting behind him. Johnson got back into second with Todd falling back a spot to third. Todd then would fight back around Johnson passing him again for second on the 22nd lap. With the great duel for second happening between Todd and Johnson they were maintaining contact with English keeping him in their sights as they diced it out for second place. When Todd for the last time got by Johnson he then set his sights on English. As English again was approaching some lapped cars Todd was gaining on him lap after lap. Todd finally was able to get right behind English as the two then would go side by side swapping the lead back and forth for several circuits as the dived in and out of traffic. The two drivers were putting on quite a show for the large crowd of fans on hand as Todd pulled in front of English to take over the lead with five laps remaining. A period of cautions with three to go kept Todd from getting away from English on the restarts, but the final restart was the ticket for Todd as he would go on to win his third Battle of the Bluegrass event of 2004. English in only his second career BoB start would take second followed by Hatton, Johnson and Lee.

Completing the top ten was Tim Tungate, John Gill, Doug Smith, Steve Cornelius and Johnny Wheeler.

In preliminary events English was the Racing Optics/Russell Baker Racing Engines fast timer with a lap of 13.88 seconds around the 3/8ths mile dirt track. English also earned a $50 bonus courtesy of Speedecals of Campbellsville, KY for setting quick time for the night. Crown Spray Power Heat race winners were English, Johnson and Todd.

The next O'Reilly NARA Battle of the Bluegrass Event will be this Saturday Night, June 26 at the Soggy Bottom Speedway in Morgantown, KY paying $3000 to win.
