Competition just got tougher at DuQuoin; Schrader enters Southern Illinois ARCA 100

(DuQUOIN Ill. – August 25, 2015) – As competitive as the recent Allen Crowe ARCA 100 was at the Illinois State Fairgrounds, it’s going to get tougher yet when the 62nd annual Southern Illinois 100 presented by Federated Car Care rolls off at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds mile-dirt Labor Day Monday, September 7.

And that’s because veteran Ken Schrader, who was absent from the line-up at Springfield, will be returning to the cockpit of the No. 52 Federated Auto Parts Chevrolet for this year’s championship stock car classic at the DuQuoin “Magic Mile”. Schrader, 60, the oldest winner in ARCA history (Salem/April, 2015), won the Southern Illinois 100 as recent as 2013.

Schrader’s special connection to DuQuoin goes back to his youth.

“First time I went (to DuQuoin) was ’64,” Schrader said. “My dad and I went. I remember sleeping in the back of his station wagon excited as could be.

“I thought it was the biggest race I’d ever seen. I thought there couldn’t be a bigger race in the world than this. I love the place. Been going ever since.”

In addition to his three ARCA wins at DuQuoin, he finished second in 2003, third in 2002, fourth in 2001, sixth in 2014 and eighth in 2004. He also earned three Menards Pole Awards presented by Ansell in ’04, ’06 and ‘13.

Schrader is among a growing list of entrants for the annual ARCA stock car classic at the historic fairgrounds horse track, one that includes 10-time series champion Frank Kimmel, who has five wins at DuQuoin. Only Tony Stewart’s victory in 2003 prevented Kimmel from sweeping five consecutive wins on the “Magic Mile”.

“It’s been a few years since we’ve won one at DuQuoin, and we’re probably in our best shape ever to win again,” Kimmel said. “We’re definitely looking forward to it. The fairgrounds tracks hold special meaning for me. When you consider the names that have won there over the years, you can really appreciate the history of the place, when, back in the day, you had to do well at these places to win championships and go places.”

Illinois Drivers on the March at DuQuoin
Expect a strong contingent of Illinois drivers in the field at DuQuoin, including local Benton, Illinois favorite Shane Cockrum. Cockrum, who won the USAC Silver Crown Ted Horn 100 at DuQuoin last year, is one of two drivers attempting both the Ted Horn 100 champ car race and the Southern Illinois 100 stock car race this year. The other driver entering both is Galesburg, Illinois’ A.J. Fike, who won the Allen Crowe ARCA 100 last Sunday on the Springfield mile-dirt.

Other Illinois drivers entered for the Southern Illinois 100 are Springfield’s Kelly Kovski, El Paso’s Ryan Unzicker, Highland Park’s David Levine and Morris’s Alex Clubb. Kovski finished third last Sunday at Springfield with Levine and Unzicker trailing in seventh and eighth, respectively.

ARCA championship contenders Grant Enfinger (defending Southern Illinois 100 winner), Josh Williams, Austin Wayne Self and Tom Hessert are also entered. Hessert finished second to Schrader at DuQuoin in 2013…his Cunningham Motorsports teammate Kyle Weatherman finished second at Springfield just last Sunday.

Dean Roper is the all-time winner of the Southern Illinois 100 with six wins in ’81, ’83, ’83, ’86, ’87 and ’94.

Impressive Past Southern Illinois 100 Winners
The past winners list of the Southern Illinois 100 includes some of the most widely-recognized names in American motorsports. Jay Frank won the inaugural Southern Illinois 100 in 1950. Just some of the winners who would follow include Marshall Teague, Indy 500 winners Jimmy Bryan and AJ Foyt, Fred Lorenzen, Don White, Norm Nelson, Jack Bowsher, NASCAR champions Rusty Wallace and Tony Stewart, Bob Keselowski, Billy Thomas, Ken Schrader, Parker Kligerman, and current NASCAR XFINITY Series point leader Chris Buescher, the 2012 ARCA national champion.

Raceday Schedule
The 62nd running of the Southern Illinois 100 presented by Federated Car Care is scheduled to get the green flag at approximately 1:30 p.m. local Central time. Practice is scheduled from 9:00-10:00 a.m. with Menards Pole Qualifying presented by Ansell following at 11:15. ARCAracing.com will feature live audio coverage of all on-track activities including flag-to-flag coverage of the Southern Illinois 100. Live timing and scoring of all on-track activities and live chat box will also be available throughout the afternoon at arcaracing.com.

Local Illinois favorite Cockrum doing the DuQuoin double in honor of car owner Hill

(DuQUOIN, Ill. – August 31, 2015) – Whenever Shane Cockrum was entered in an ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards event at Springfield or DuQuoin over the last few seasons, it was always in Brad Hill’s No. 71 Tim Cooksey Oil Ford.

And it shall be so again when the 62nd running of the Southern Illinois 100 presented Federated Car Care rolls off on the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds Magic Mile dirt Labor Day Monday, September 7. However, the effort will go off without the man who made it all happen – car owner Brad Hill, whose untimely and unexpected passing in April of 2015 tore through the heart and soul of the team.Shane Cockrum, Brad Hill and crew at DuQuoin in 2013

“Brad’s irreplaceable,” Cockrum said. “There’d be no team without him. Fortunately, before he died, he put together a really good group of guys. Once the shock started to subside – the sadness and grief will never wear off – we got some momentum going for what Brad would have wanted us to do.

“Tim Cooksey of Cooksey Oil stepped up. Greg Kimmel, a retired pharmacist from here in Benton (Ill.) came to the rescue. Greg was a good close friend of Brad’s…Brad made everyone feel like a good close friend. He really was an incredible man. DuQuoin was Brad’s love. The more we began to talk, the more we wanted to go back (to DuQuoin) one last time as a memorial to Brad.”

The dedication and memorial to Hill goes beyond the ARCA stock car program. When Cockrum’s Silver Crown car owners – the Hardy Boys – got wind of the reinvigorated plans to revive the No. 71 ARCA car, they decided to change their longtime number 66 on their Silver Crown Champ Car to No. 71, in honor of Hill.

The combination of the Hardy Boys and Cockrum is an extremely effective one. Cockrum is not only the defending Ted Horn 100 Silver Crown winner at DuQuoin, he won the Silver Crown race back in July at the Terre Haute Action Track. Cockrum also led 41 laps last week at Springfield before a right-rear tire issue dropped him back.

“We’re coming back to defend our title (at DuQuoin),” Cockrum continued. “And we’re thrashing hard to get the ARCA car ready…we’re about 95% there. We’re actually running a different ARCA car this year than last year. This is a really nice car. This is the car that Brad was getting ready to run Chicagoland with.

“We’re really looking forward to running both shows with the 71. It’s our salute to Brad, and I’m honored to be driving both.”

If Cockrum were to win the upcoming Southern Illinois 100, he would join only Jimmy Bryan and A.J. Foyt as the only drivers who have won both championship races at DuQuoin…the Ted Horn 100 and the Southern Illinois 100. Bryan won the Ted Horn 100 in 1955 and ’56, and then won the Southern Illinois 100 in ’57, which was sanctioned by MARC that season, the predecessor to ARCA. Foyt won the Ted Horn 100 in 1960, ’61, ’63, ’64, ’67 and ’72, and won the Southern Illinois 100 stock car event in ’69. No driver has won both on the same weekend over the 62-year span.

Cockrum is clearly the local favorite at DuQuoin.

“DuQuoin is 20 minutes from the house,” Cockrum said. “We seem to have a little better luck there, and I credit that to our hometown crowd. In driver intros, you hear your name called out and you hear that roar from the crowd. It really gives you that little extra. It makes a difference.”

In addition to working a full-time job as a fire fighter for the city of Benton, Illinois, the 33-year-old local fan-favorite runs his own fulltime towing business. And oh by the way, he races 50-60 times a year in a combination of ARCA, Silver Crown, sprints and midgets. He’s married and the father of two girls – 14 and 10.

Outside of running back-to-back races on the same mile dirt track, Cockrum says there isn’t a lot of cross-over from a 1,500-lb. open wheel car to a 3,400-lb ARCA car.

“They’re really two totally different disciplines. Getting in a hundred miles the day before the ARCA race is beneficial, but there’s a big difference in the way you put a 1,500-lb. car in the corner and the way you go in with the ARCA car. The ARCA car is really cool the way everything slows down; it’s like running in slow motion.

“I really think the biggest difference between the two is that the changes in the handling in the Silver Crown cars are far more dramatic. You have 75 gallons of fuel right behind you in the Silver Crown car, so you’ll lose four-to-five-hundred pounds of fuel weight over the course of the race, and you’re always, constantly chasing that feeling. The ARCA car is way more steady and stable where the changes throughout the Shane Corckrum car shot DuQuoin 2014race are smaller; it’s just a way different environment.”

The past winners list of the Southern Illinois 100 includes some of the most widely-recognized names in American motorsports. Jay Frank won the inaugural Southern Illinois 100 in 1950. Just some of the winners who would follow include Marshall Teague, Indy 500 winners Jimmy Bryan and AJ Foyt, Fred Lorenzen, Don White, Norm Nelson, Jack Bowsher, NASCAR champions Rusty Wallace and Tony Stewart, Bob Keselowski, Billy Thomas, Ken Schrader, Parker Kligerman, and current NASCAR XFINITY Series point leader Chris Buescher. Current ARCA point leader Grant Enfinger won last year’s Southern Illinois 100.

Entry Lists Build Excitement For Racing At DuQuoin State Fair
Labor Day Weekend Show To Feature USAC, ARCA, & UMP Modifieds

Each and every year, fans flock to the Du Quoin State in Southern Illinois for the tradition of racing at The Magic Mile. The Labor Day weekend show closes out the fair with racing in three highly popular classes. On tap are the USAC Silver Crown cars, the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards, and the DIRTcar UMP Modifieds. The expected entry lists are very good heading into the weekend's events, adding to the excitement of an already great show.

On Sunday, September 6, the resurgent USAC Silver Crown tour will be paying the dirt track a visit for the Ted Horn 100. Horn, who made numerous starts in the Indianapolis 500, finished no worse than fourth over a stretch of nine years between 1936 and 1948. Horn passed away late in 1948 after a crash at the fairgrounds. In 2015, 30 drivers are expected to compete for the Ted Horn 100 trophy.

The odds on favorite for the open wheel racecars is defending champion, Kody Swanson. Swanson has won seven of the last nine dirt track races in the Silver Crown cars but DuQuoin has provided new winners in each of the last three campaigns. NASCAR star Kyle Larson won in 2011, Chris Urish took the hardware in 2013, and local favorite Shane Cockrum won last season. Cockrum, from Benton, IL, will be trying for a double, racing with both USAC and ARCA this weekend. Swanson will be challenged by other point contenders this year, including Jerry Coons, Jr., A.J. Fike, Aaron Pierce, and C.J. Leary. Chris Windom, David Byrne, Austin Nemire, Jacob Wilson, and Rex Norris, III complete the top ten in this year's standings.

30+ drivers are also entered in the Southern Illinois 100 presented by Federated Car Care for the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards. That event will take place on Labor Day Monday, September 7. In addition to the aforementioned Shane Cockrum, Galesburg, IL driver A.J. Fike will be trying for the double, running both top tier races. Fike has a great chance, coming off of his first ARCA victory at the Illinois State Fair in Springfield two weeks ago. Two veterans that will try to keep that from happening are NASCAR's Ken Schrader and Frank Kimmel, who will be making his 500th ARCA start on Monday. Of course, you can't count out point leader Grant Enfinger as well as other series front-runners, Josh Williams, Austin Wayne Self, Tom Hessert, and David Levine. Sarah Cornett-Ching, Bo LeMastus, Thomas Praytor, James Swanson, and Kyle Weatherman are top ten in the current ARCA standings.

A healthy pre-entry list of UMP Dirtcar Modified drivers are looking forward to their one chance a year to compete at The Magic Mile. Currently, 20 drivers have let their intentions to compete be known, while a number of others are expected to show up this weekend. The field will be running hotlaps and preliminaries on Sunday and their feature on Monday. Entry forms and information are available at the Track Enterprises webpage.

On Sunday, September 6, pit gates open at 1:00, grandstands and the ticket office open at 4:00, practice begins at 5:00, USAC Silver Crown qualifying begins at 6:30, Modified heats are scheduled for 7:00, and the Ted Horn 100 will take the green at 8:00.

The Monday, September 7 schedule has pits and registration opening at 6:00 AM, grandstands and ticket office at 8:30, ARCA practice at 9:00 and qualifying at 11:15, the Modified feature at 12:00, and the Southern Illinois 100 for the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards at 1:30.

Advance discount tickets are on sale at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds box office in person or by calling 618-542-1535. Early purchase of tickets will save the buyer $5 per day.

Driver Versatility Big Part of DuQuoin Motorsports History
DuQuoin, IL (September 1, 2015)-by Jay Hardin Track Enterprises

When A.J. Fike drove to victory lane in the SuperChevyStores.com-Allen Crowe 100 ARCA Racing Series event at the Illinois State Fair two weeks ago, he walked into the auto racing history books in front of a live TV audience as one of a select group of racing drivers who have displayed a versatility seldom seen in today’s age. The 35 year old Galesburg, Illinois native became just the fifth driver in the long history of racing on the Springfield Mile to win races in both a USAC dirt championship car and a full bodied stock car and the first driver to join that exclusive club in 36 years! With that in mind a look was taken at the DuQuoin State Fair history books to see who was part of the club of ‘double duty’ racers.

A.J. joined namesake A.J. Foyt, Len Sutton, Al Unser and Roger McCluskey as the only drivers to win in stock car and dirt car competition in the state capitol. Unser is the only driver to win both on the same weekend (1972) and Foyt himself was the last to join the club when he won the 1979 Allen Crowe 100 USAC Stock Car event after 4 previous victories in the Tony Bettenhausen 100 dirt car race.

When it comes to racing more than one vehicle on the last weekend of the DuQuoin State Fair, 33 men since 1950 have tried to win both the Ted Horn 100 and the Southern Illinois stock car event on the same weekend, yet no one has swept both days. In fact, Jimmy Bryan and A.J. Foyt are the only two to post a dirt car and stock car victory on the “Magic Mile”. Bryan won the Ted Horn 100 in 1955-56 and won one of two stock car races held in 1957. Foyt, a six time winner of the Ted Horn 100 dirt car race, gained his lone stock car win at DuQuoin in 1969.

A double was attempted many times beginning in the early 1950’s but it did not always involve a combination of dirt cars and stock cars. At various times from 1954 through 1972 a third event would be held on DuQuoin’s race weekend, usually in the form of sprint cars or midgets. As a result many of the same drivers who would enter the Ted Horn 100, would moonlight in the sprint cars or midgets. In something of a surprise research indicates that the number of drivers who made the main event in sprint cars and championship dirt cars exceeds the number who made main events in midgets and championship dirt cars at the southern Illinois oval. The double nearly went away in the 1970’s and during the 1980’s just two drivers, Ken Schrader and Tom Bigelow were able to make the starting field in both events.

Jerry Nemire revived the tradition in 2003 and since then only once (2011) has no driver made the starting lineup for the Horn 100 and the Southern Illinois 100.

In 1954 Chuck Stevenson was the first driver to attempt the double, his feat made even more difficult by his entry in the AAA Sprint Car race held during the weekend making him the first to attempt a “DuQuoin Triple”. The “DuQuoin Triple” is even more difficult than the double, just ten men since 1950 have attempted three different events on the last weekend of the fair. Prior to 2004, Danville, Illinois barber, politician and future Indy 500 starter Larry “Boom Boom” Cannon was the last driver to run three different events, making the main in midgets, stock cars and the dirt car race. The fair eventually went back to just two events in the 1970’s and three events did not return until 1994 with the Oldani Memorial UMP Modified event added to the last weekend of the fair. A.J. Fike himself stepped into history in 2004 when he entered the “Triple Club” making the Ted Horn 100, the Southern Illinois 100 and the Oldani Memorial feature.

Fike returns to DuQuoin as a favorite to pull off what has been impossible, win both the Horn 100 and the Federated-Southern Illinois 100. He will be one of two drivers attempting the weekend double. The recently appointed fire chief of Benton, Illinois, Shane Cockrum returns to the site of his triumphant 2014 Ted Horn 100 victory and is a potential dark horse in the Southern Illinois 100 driving the last race for the Brad Hill Motorsports crew. Car owner Brad Hill of West Frankfort passed away over the winter and a group of southern Illinoisans are running the car as a tribute to Hill.

The Ted Horn 100 is Sunday night, September 6 while the Federated-Southern Illinois 100 takes place on Labor Day at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds.

uch Anticipated Race Weekend Has Arrived In Southern Illinois
DuQuoin State Fair To Close Out With Sunday & Monday Events

The tradition continues this Labor Day weekend, as the roar of racing engines will echo through the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds in DuQuoin, IL on Sunday and Monday, September 6 & 7. Three top tier divisions will be thrilling fans, young and old with Sunday’s racing at night and Monday’s during the afternoon.

A stellar list of 30+ USAC Silver Crown cars are set to go on Sunday for the Ted Horn 100. It was just a couple of years ago that the Silver Crown Series only had a car count in the low teens for the State Fair races. During the 2015 season, however, the travelling tour started to really turn it around as car counts grew. Fields around 30 have been on hand at each of the two Track Enterprises shows this year, the Hoosier Hundred and the Illinois State Fair race. The field at DuQuoin should be impressive with point leader Kody Swanson and last year’s winner, Shane Cockrum, among the favorites.

Much like USAC, the ARCA Racing Series Presented By Menards will have a large turnout of cars. For the full bodied stock cars, it’s one of just two appearances on dirt each season, making it a favorite and memorable stop for competitors. Among the favorites will be former NASCAR Sprint Cup driver Ken Schrader, as well as many time champion Frank Kimmel, and the winner at Springfield, A.J. Fike. 30+ drivers are scheduled to take the green on Monday at 1:30 CT.

In upwards of 20 UMP Modifieds are pre-entered into this weekend’s show with several more expected to attend. The Modifieds will be racing in the Bill Oldani Memorial 20 lapper that pays $2,000 to the winner. Modified prelims are held on Sunday with the feature race on Monday.

On Sunday, September 6, pits will open at 1:00, grandstands at 4:00, practice at 5:00, qualifying will start at 6:30, and racing will take the green at 7:00. On Monday, September 7, pits open at 6:00 AM, with grandstands at 8:30, practice at 9:00, qualifying at 11:15, and the green drops on racing at 12:00. All times central.

Grandstand admission each day is $30 for adults, while children 11 and under are $10. Presale adult tickets are available through the end of Saturday for a $5 discount. Tickets are available at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds Box Office by calling 618-542-1535.

Full info on this weekend’s show can be found at www.trackenterprises.com or by visiting the Facebook page atwww.facebook.com/TrackEnterprises.
