OSKALOOSA, Iowa (May 14) – The season opener had to wait one day but a beautiful evening for racing at the Southern Iowa Speedway Thursday night was worth the wait with four exciting classes heating up the Mahaska County Half-Mile Monster for the first time in 2009.

The first feature of the night was the Carter’s Manufacturing USRA B-Mods taking to the track with 19 drivers trying to take the checkers, but Kevin Fee of Knoxville took home the top prize. Fee and Andrew Schroeder of Keswick thrilled the crowd with side-by-side action but a flat right front tire ended Schroeder’s night early.

Josh Modde of Des Moines made his first appearance pay off in the runner-up spot with Cayden Carter taking third. However, Carter was later disqualified during post-race technical inspection. This gave Oskaloosa's Tyler Groenendyk the third spot, with Mike Shelton of Bloomfield in fourth and Bryon Weyer of Des Moines the fifth position.

The USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Car feature saw Zack VanderBeek of New Sharon and Nathan Wood of Keswick lead the field to the start of the 15-lap feature event. VanderBeek sped to victory as Mike Van Genderen of Newton held off Matt Greiner of Washington and Brain Mitrisin of Oskaloosa after an exciting three-car battle throughout the race. Wood wound up fifth.

In the USRA Hobby Stock feature, Wes Almond of Oskaloosa and Dan Dyer of Ottumwa led the field to the green with Dyer taking the early race lead before Dale Porter of Pulaski made the pass in turns 1-2. Porter looked to have the field covered, but Bobby Greene of Eddyville ran down the leader and made the pass with only four laps remaining.

Greene took the win over Porter, who took a close second-place finish. T.J. Henderson of Douds took his career-best finish by claiming the third spot and Andy Coleman of Packwood was fourth ahead of Oskaloosa's Kris Walker.
The always-exciting back flip from Greene thrilled the crowd as he stuck the landing like an Olympic gold medalist.

To put an exclamation point on the night, Zack VanderBeek made the pass on fellow New Sharon racer Brad Pinkerton in the MUSCO Lighting USRA Modified feature to take his second win of the evening. The post-race celebration was extra special as daughter Addison was in victory lane to get her picture taken with mom, Carrie, and dad for the first time.

Pinkerton took the second spot with Richie Gustin Jr. of Gilman third after a hard-fought battle with fourth-place finisher Scott Dickey of Packwood. David Holder of Clarence, Mo., rounded out the top-5 finishers.

The Southern Iowa Speedway will be invaded by the high-powered Modifieds of the USMTS Casey's General Stores National Tour on Tuesday night, May 19, with NASCAR superstars Ken Schrader and Kenny Wallace in competition. Also on the racing card will be the USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars, Carter’s Manufacturing USRA B-Mods and USRA Hobby Stocks.

Pits gates will swing open at 5:00 with grandstand gates opening at 5:30. Hot laps begin at 7:00 and the first heat race will take the green flag at 7:30. Adult tickets are $15, kids ages 6-12 are just $5 and children under 6 get in for free.

Fans can pick up $2-off discount coupons on race day at all three Casey's General Store locations in Oskaloosa.

There will be an open practice for drivers in all classes on Monday night from 6:00 to 9:15. Pit admission is $15 while admission to the grandstands is free of charge.

With next week's big blockbuster event on Tuesday, there will be no weekly racing on Wednesday night.
