There were five familiar faces and one new one in victory lane at Warrensburg, Missouri’s, Central Missouri Speedway Saturday night. There were 100 cars and stars on hand as well as a large crowd of fans, who witnessed a total of 23 races, including five exciting main events during the evening’s program.

The racing got under way with the Mighty Modifieds and their rainout make-up feature event from June 4th. Movin’ Dave Meyer and Dean Wille brought the field to the green flag for the 20-lap main event with Meyer leading through lap seven as he battled with Wille, Lance Kobusch and Dennis Walrath. By lap nine the 4-car battle saw Walrath take the lead just as Wille lost a drive shaft coming out of turn four. After racing resumed, Walrath retained the lead and never looked back, earning his second main event win of the year. At the line Walrath was followed by Lance Kobusch, Gary Blackburn, Meyer, Alan Deatherage and new points leader, Terry Schultz.

Once the modified make-up event was complete, the regular racing program got under way with the Street Stocks taking to the track for their heat races. The four heats were won by Ted Welschmeyer, Wayne Harper, Chad Eickleberry and John Ebert. There was also a B-main ran which was won by Phil Wright. At the drop of the green flag for the main event it was Welschmeyer and Harper bringing the field to the green flag. From the get go the competition was fierce up front as Welschmeyer, Harper, Marc Carter and Chad Eickleberry all traded the top four positions. It didn’t take long for Carter to race to the front as by lap four he muscled his way around Harper just as Welschmeyer’s night came to an end with mechanical woes, relegating him to a 19th-place finish. Carter then stretched out his lead leaving the rest of the field far behind until a wild wreck down the front straight-a-way brought out a red-flag condition. Phil Wright’s car got crossed up coming out of turn four and led to a chain reaction incident down the front stretch that eventually led to Kevin Jameson flipping over and ending up on his side entering turn one. Thankfully Jameson was uninjured in the event and the race resumed with Carter still at the helm. In the end it was Carter taking his sixth main event win of the year. Harper came home second followed by Eickleberry, Bryant Moyer, Jimmy Ngo and Troy Turley, rounding at the top six.

Another large field of Limited Late Models was on hand for some wheel lifting, chassis-dancing action on the smooth racing surface. The three 6-lap heat races saw point’s leader David Gemes, Kevin Coyne and Virgil Jeffery all in victory lane. Nineteen cars took the green for the 15-lap main event with Gemes and Coyne bringing the field to turn one for what turned out to be a high-attrition event. It took a couple attempts to get the race under way. On one of the starts cars were three-wide down the back stretch with Coyne ending up exiting the racing area at a very high rate of speed. Luckily all track personnel were able to get out of the way of Coyne’s car and were uninjured in Coyne’s off-track excursion. Coyne was not injured either but was unfortunately not able to resume the race upon the next restart. After going back to green-flag racing action, the field was reduced by seven cars, including three-time main event winner Jeff Schlup. On lap two Jimmy Morris and Brett Rollert got together in turn three with Morris getting the worst end of the deal as he nearly ended up on his roof. Thankfully the car came back down without turning over but Morris, Rollert and Shad Badder were all done for the night as a result of the crash. Once the remaining cars re-took the green flag, it was Gemes and Jeffery waging a classic race for the lead. Lap after lap Jeffery was right on Gemes’ bumper trying to find a way around but never could hook up good enough to make the pass for the lead. Late in the event, the returning Sean Williams had made his way all the way into the fourth position from his 19th-place starting spot but ended up spinning down the backstretch with mechanical woes, relegating him to a seventh-place finish. When the field took the checkered flag on lap 10 due to the time limit, it was Gemes taking the win over Jeffery in second, followed by Steven Clancy, Mike McCoy, John Binning and George Jacobs.

When the 305 and MSCS sprint cars took to the track for their heat race action it was Michael Brown and a hard-charging Terry Moore tasting victory in the 305 heats with Danny Billings taking the heat win in the MSCS sprint division. As the feature event got under way, the MSCS cars were lined up in front of the 305s as the classes were combined for a full field of cars and some high-flying winged sprint-car action. With two separate main events going on in one race it was an exciting race for fans to keep up with as drivers jockeyed for every position. The 305 cars were jostling for positions as they raced not only against the other cars in their class but against the high-powered MSCS cars as well. Danny and Alan Billings led the field to Hershel Thompson’s green flag for the 15-lap event with Danny Billings quickly distancing himself from his fellow competitors. With only one caution flag flying during the event, the race pace was torrid and saw battles going on for every spot. Within the confines of the 305 class Terry Moore, Kenny Potter and Austin Alumbaugh battled right to the end to determine the winner, Moore was able to keep his pursuers behind him and take the 305 win over Potter and Alumbaugh. Will Pierce made a last-lap pass on Michael Brown to take fourth, Brown followed in fifth and Donnie Rothwell rounded out the field in sixth. Billings was never challenged in the MSCS division as he easily took the win over Alan Billings, Ken Stolfus, and David Long.

For the ultra-competitive Mighty Modified division, 39 cars were on hand for five heat races and two b-mains in order to sort out the 25-car starting lineup. The heat races were won by Jim Moody, Chad Lyle, Tyler Hibner, Dennis Walrath and James McMillin. The b-mains saw two of the CMS young guns in victory lane as Kyle Westerhold and Jesse Wheeler took the wins. With 25 cars taking to the track, including provisional starter Gary Blackburn, Jr., it was Jim Moody and Chad Lyle taking the field to the green flag. From the get go, Lyle, a dry-slick track condition driving master, distanced himself from the rest of the field until the caution flew at the halfway point for the 1p machine of Steve Potter. Both Potter and Kobusch were done for the evening after mechanical woes ended their nights. After one more quick caution for Paul Knight, the field once again set sail for Lyle, who again put a lot of daylight between himself and second place. Even though Lyle was way out front it was a classic battle to the finish for the rest of the field as McMillin, Walrath, Meyer, Moody and Wille held down the rest of the top six positions. Meyer, who started 17th on the field, was all the way up to fourth position by lap 11 as he, Walrath and Moody continued to battle door to door. Behind the top six Richard Lane, Lonnie Hibner and Joe Bradshaw were trying to improve their positions as well. When the checkered flag flew, 22 of the 25 starters crossed the line with Lyle taking the win over McMillin, Meyer, Moody, Walrath and Lonnie Hibner. It was Lyle’s second main-event win of the year.
