Another hot summer evening at Central Missouri Speedway went along with the equally hot racing action on the dirt oval as a large crowd of racing fans were treated to 23 races featuring 97 cars. The track crew worked hard during the week with the hot and dry weather conditions around the Warrensburg area, but they produced a racing surface conducive to some exciting heat and feature races throughout the evening.

The usual order of the show was different this week with the Limited Late Models taking the track first for their weekly heats with California’s Jeff Schlup, Derek Nevels of Higginsville, and Owen Evinger from Oak Grove taking the checkers for the Late Model heat races. In the A feature 21 Late Models lined up to the start the race. Unfortunately, point’s leader, David Gemes had an engine problem before even taking the track so everyone in the division had to chance to chew into his points lead. Early on it appeared the 73B car of Shad Badder, Oak Grove had a good set up and he proved it by sliding up in turn four to pass Schlup early in the race. Also fighting up front was the Chad Clark 00 car out of Marshall. Clark was then involved in a spin and had to go tail back before moving his way back up later on. Badder hung on late in the race for his first Late Model feature at CMS this year.

Next on the card was a wild Street Stock A feature. 30 Street Stocks were registered to compete in 4 heat races and a B feature to sort out the field. The heat race winners were Odessa’s Bobby Raybourn, Gary Hemme from Sedalia, Jimmy Ngo, Independence and Warrensburg’s Chad Eickleberry. Also winning the Street B-main was Bryant Moyer from Lone Jack. The A feature started with Gary Hemme out front holding off Eickleberry and the j66 car of Jay Lyle until lap 13. Hemme had quite a scare when his car gave out on the front straight away and caught fire before rescue crews doused the flames. Nathan Himes also battled with Mark Cater for fourth early before departing the track with a mechanical issue. Jimmy Ngo finished just behind the leaders in third. Another nice top 5 run from the consistent Tammy Korff out of Fulton starting in the 11th position before finishing in fifth passing the point’s leader Wayne Harper from Warrensburg. Lyle ran hard to the checkers for his second feature win of the year with Carter close on his tail after a late caution.

The Limited Late Models were once again up to starting blocks for the Tom Wilson Memorial Special Feature. Unfortunately some drivers were unable to make it back for the feature and some cars had mechanical problems after the earlier points feature. This time Jeff Schlup was tuned in for the 20 lap special for his fourth CMS feature win of the year. He easily took the checkers with Ashland’s Virgil Jeffrey in second after a late lap pass around Steven Clancy. He fixed his machine after the first feature enough even with sheet metal missing on the right side to finish the race. Some early cautions caused some mechanical problems for Danny Monroe after being as high as fourth place early. Owen Evenger made a nice climb from tenth early in the race to finish strong in fourth.

The 34 Mighty Modifieds were just fabulous again for their five heat races along with 2 B-Features to sort out the starting 25 cars. At several points during the modified races two and three wide racing in the heats as well as the feature was not uncommon. Heat races were won by Concordia’s Dave Meyer, Richard Layne from Kansas City, Lonnie Hibner, Chillicothe, Alan Deatherage, Concordia, and Dennis Walrath, Clinton. Steve Potter out of Boonville and Tyler Hibner, Chillicothe won the B Features with Concordia’s Ryan Lovercamp receiving the promoter’s provisional start for the feature race. Walrath once again won the $1,000 modified purse for his third feature win of the year after working his up on the low side around the early leaders, Richard Layne and Dave Meyer. He also had to deal with some early challenges from Lonnie Hibner and Bobby Layne. Lonnie and Lee Hibner later tangled up causing both to leave with mechanical problems. A very impressive second place finish from Fulton’s Gary Blackburn after he started in 12th place and worked his way up in the pack. Layne finished just behind him in third with a good run on the night. Young gun, Kyle Westerhold from Blue Springs also showed he could run with the big guns up front. He finished with a strong sixth place in the feature. Also a nice race from Knob Noster’s Joe Bradshaw with a fourth place finish for the night.

The final feature of the night was the 305 Sprints with an exciting 10 car race. The heat winners were Donnie Rothwell of Columbia and Kenny Potter from Harrisonville. After an early wreck on the front side between Rothwell and Higginsville’s Austin Alumbaugh, the race ran quick with few cautions to slow the speedy sprints. The 66 car of Rob Hockett out of Lone Jack started in seventh place, but worked his way up front to take his first 305 CMS Sprint feature of the year. A solid run from Kenny Potter enabled him to stay up front to finish second and Michael White out of LaMonte also came up from eighth to finish in third. Will Pierce worked around cars into a fourth place finish from his back row starting position.
