Gary Walsh (Fenton, MO) won his first SX Performance Fuel Systems Super Pro event at Gateway International Raceway. Just a couple weeks ago Walsh “survived” the Roy Hills Drag Racing School and this past weekend, Walsh “survived” 7 rounds of competition and 49 other competitors.

Dirk Sutton (St. Peters, MO) became $2,000 richer and may have picked up a nickname in the process. Sutton won Gateway’s Big Bucks Weekly Mini Megabucks 1/8 mile Super Pro Race. Sutton raced through 7 rounds of competition and changing weather conditions and was dead on in 6 of them. Hence “Dead-on” Dirk.

Ron Hendrixson (St. Louis, MO) got an early start to the season by winning the Gateway Pro E.T. division race. The self described “late season bloomer” tried changing his past trend by playing hard on the practice tree in the off-season. Hendrixson had to bring his A game as he had to fight through 60 of Gateway’s toughest, eventually meeting up with 2005 Pro E.T. Champion Clay Tyler (Wood River, IL) in the finals. Hendrixson’s .0148 package left little room for the ’05 champ who started the race with a .005 bulb but broke-out on the top end.

Jim Bouckaert (Arnold, MO) pedaled his SX Performance Fuel Systems ’72 Chevelle past 45 competitors to win Gateway’s Street E.T. Class. The multi-time Street E.T. champion showed his mastery of the footbrake in the finals, launching off the line with a .018 light, and running a 12.026 on a 12.00 dial to defeat Don Allen (Waterloo, IL)

Bing Bingham (Edwardsville IL) lucked out in the final round to win Gateway’s $500 to win Pro Bike Class. Bingham was handed the race when runner up Jim Ryan (St. Peters, MO) red lit. Bingham needed Ryan’s red light as his shifter didn’t work down track, which would have lost him the race had Ryan not red lit. Bing did want to thank Michelle for helping all night.

Denny Slusser (Chamois, MO) became Gateway’s first repeat winner of the 2006 season when he won his second straight Street Bike race. Slusser defeated 2005 Street Bike Champion Charles Willis in the final round. Slusser who was awarded the wrong trophy after his first victory was given the correct trophy this time, but the track did forget to award him his win sticker. So Denny please remind the track to give you your win sticker.

Gateway’s E.T. Bracket Racing Series will return to action on June 10. For more information, please log on to www.gatewayraceway.com

Keyser, Crader, and Schollman, Win and Take Share of

Points Leads in their Respective Classes

Morgan Keyser (Marion, IL) won Gateway’s 8-9 year old Jr Dragster Division this past Friday night and took the lead in the 8-9 Jr Dragster Division Season Points Standings. Keyser has a 1 point lead over Jessica Schaeffer (Trenton, IL) the winner of the previous race. In the final round Keyser defeated Zach Royer (Gillespie, IL) who had an incredible .003 light in the first round of eliminations.

Mike Crader (O’Fallon, MO) won Gateway’s 10-12 Year Old Jr. Dragster Division and is now in a three-way tie for first place in Gateway’s Season Points. Crader is knotted up with Jeff Campete (O’Fallon, MO) and the winner of Gateway’s last points event Matt Schaeffer (Trenton, IL).

Cory Schollman (St. Louis, MO) won Gateway’s 13 and up year old category and now shares the points lead with Shannon Beimfohr (Edwardsville,IL) who has a final round and semi final round performance this year. Schollman defeated Carly “the bug” Bryant (Litchfield, IL) in the final round.

The Gateway Jr. Drag Racing Series continues on June 9 with Round 1 of the Holzhauer Jr. Dragster Summer Shootout and the O'Reilly's Jr. Drag Racing League Challenge. The winners of those races will receive a Gateway trophy, a Holzhauer Jr. Dragster Summer Shootout Trophy, and the NHRA O'Reilly's Jr. Dragster Challenge Trophy. Additionally they will gain points in Gateway's Weekly Series and the Holzhauer Jr. Dragster Summer Shootout.

Aaron Hodges wins Round 1 of the Gateway Pro Mod Series

Aaron Hodges (Oakland, MO) and his Hodges and Sons race team won the first round of the Gateway Pro Mod Series. The team improved their performance of their 63 Corvette throughout the day, eventually having their best pass of the day in the final round when they ran 4.15 at 171.84 MPH.

Hodges opponent in the final round was Delon Joseph (Kansas City, MO). Joseph’s ’05 Cavalier was the number 1 qualifier in the event with a 4.21 at 165.23 in the cold weather qualifying sessions. Joseph was very consistent and ran in the 4.20’s all day until the final round when he had problems on the line caused by driver error.

“I forgot to dump the air shift and took off in high gear. I hate it because we we’re so consistent all day and then I dumped it in the finals,” said Joesph.

Hodges was unaware of the problems Joseph had on the start line.

“I expected to have a close run with Delon,” said Hodges, “I didn’t know he had a problem, we had our hands full with our own run, we ran 4.15, I didn’t know he had trouble until it was all over.”

Gateway’s “Buell Bob” gets big win at AHDRA Gypsy Rendezvous Nationals

Gateway International Raceway weekly racer Bob Pannell got a big win this past weekend when Gateway hosted the All-Harley Drag Racing Association’s Gypsy Rendezvous Nationals. Pannell, the 2004 Gateway Pro Bike National Dragster Challenge winner, was victorious in the AHDRA’s Syn 3 ET Bracket Division.

Pannell, whose better known at Gateway as “Buell Bob”, got his nickname by campaigning a Buell in Gateway’s Pro Bike Class. Pannell had the bike for 4 years and has taken it from a stock Buell to one that is a winner in Pro Bike.

“One of our other competitors Don Klarer is an electronics genius, and he and I have been working on the bike for the past 4 years to get it where it is,” said Pannell.

Ironically Pannell had to dismantle his electronics to comply with AHDRA’s Syn 3 ET Class rules.

“John Binns, the person that I beat in the finals, has always messed with me saying I’m not a real racer because I race with all electronics. So it was nice to take them off and get the win.”

“It was a great weekend with a bunch of cool bikes and good people. I’d just like to thanks my wife and kids, Patty Bush from Doc’s, Don Klarer, Tim Zeuner, Jim Wagner, and ASE Motorsports.”
