William Thomas, or “Mr. Smooth” as they call him,the third generation driver from Phoenix City Alabama certainly proved worthy of his nick name, as he clipped leader Lee Cooper of Spartanburg SC by inches at the checkered flag in what had to be the most dramatic finish in FASTRAK Late Model history at night one of the FASTRAK 'Grand Nationals' at Green Valley Speedway in Glencoe Alabama . "Once I got going & got in position I just waited to make my move" said the longhaired youngster that many have tabbed as the next lead of the famed 'Alabama Gang'.

This was the night that the entire Southern and Mid East Regions had been fighting for all year earning points towards this stellar event. A broken a-frame that cracked a spark plug wasn`t enough to deny Thomas from the winning charge

Fifty six competitors were on hand to make their bid of night 1 for the $50,000 TO WIN Fastrak Grand Nationals. As every FASTRAK Region had in their night 1, this was it for the Southern/Mid East teams and did they respond !

Qualifying was under way with the 21 of Frankie Beard from Hartwell GA setting to the pace and earning the GM Performance Parts “TOP GUN” award. The qualifying was done with a unique format with 4 cars at a time on the track . Beards time was an amazing 15:081 making him the man to beat.

Five heats took the top three cars and three consolation races took the top three to make the 75 lap event.
