LAKE ODESSA, MI - Roger Wing of Middleville M took home the second ever NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Northern Challenge Series feature race Saturday night at I-96 Speedway. Driving the Tom Benson Remax, Bert's Glass Rocket, the 2004 Michigan Motor Sports Hall of Fame inductee started on the pole and led the entire 25 laps.
Jeff Kohn of Sheridan, MI took over third from opening night winner Rick Stout of Stanton, MI on lap four and then passed Saranac, MI racer Bry Sloan for second on lap 11 and that is where he finished. Former track champion Mike Nugent from Belding, MI was third, Stout was fourth and Jim Fairbanks of Coopersville, MI, who started 13th, rounded out the top five.
“I want to thank track promoters Mike Mouch and Andy Stebbins for bringing this series to Michigan,” Wing said. “This is a lot of fun, and to beat the caliber of drivers here is special.”
Kohn and Stout are now tied for the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Northern Challenge Series points lead at 192. Kohn has a pair of second-place finishes, and Stout has one win, and a fourth-place finish. Fairbanks and Nugent are tied for third at 184 points, and Wing moved up to the fifth spot with 176 points.
After a great looking four wide salute to the fans, the green flag waved and Wing took the lead from his front row starting spot. Action was slowed on lap 12 for John McClure of Clarksville, MI, as he came to a stop on the front stretch. With the green flag waving once again, the Delaware double file restart put Kohn on Wing's bumper.
Meanwhile, racing back in the pack was exciting, as both Fairbanks and Billy Trueblood of Ionia, MI were on the move from their row seven starting spots. But at the checkered flag, no one had anything for Wing.
The rest of the top ten were, Trevor Sloan of Saranac, MI in sixth, Trueblood took the seventh spot after starting 14th, Scott Ehlert of Crystal, MI was eighth and starting 16th, Scott Fisk of Saranac, MI finished ninth after starting 17th and National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame driver Kris Patterson of St. Johns, MI rounded out the top ten.
In preliminary heat race action, Kohn took heat one and Wing heat two on the big ½-mile dirt track.
The NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Northern Challenge Series will return to I-96 Speedway on May 16 for a double-points $2,000-to-win 40 lap feature. Promoter Mike Mouch has received phone calls from several out of state drivers interested in racing that night! For more information, log on to www.i96speedway.com.
