Three First-time venues dot this year’s PolyDome Late Model Series slate

By Tom Lathen

(Gilman City, MO) The WORLD Dirt Racing League PolyDome Late Model Series has unveiled it’s 2006 schedule, with three first-time venues included on the slate.

Among the first-time venues for the popular Gilman City, Missouri based series are a late April date at the prestigious Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa, and mid-summer dates at Boone County Speedway in Albion, Nebraska, and Viking Speedway in Alexandria, Minnesota.

“We are very excited about our 2006 schedule,” commented series founder and President Jim Wilson. “We are thrilled to be making our first-ever trip to Knoxville Raceway in April, and this year’s Masters at Cedar Lake Speedway will provide our race teams with the opportunity to race for $40,000 purses on back-to-back nights.”

“We worked very hard this year to make sure we steered clear of stand-alone shows,” added Wilson. “As we worked with promoters, for the most part, we were able to find venues that tied in very well together with other ones. With the price of fuel, we knew we had to be smart about our scheduling and I think we’ve put together a schedule that will be very workable for our race teams, our fans, and series officials.”

The 2006 WDRL slate kicks off the first weekend in April in eastern Iowa with dates at Davenport Speedway and West Liberty Raceway. The season-opener on the historic Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds half-mile oval in Davenport is scheduled for Friday, April 7, with the first of four series dates at West Liberty Raceway set for the following night, April 8.

The first-ever PolyDome Late Model Series event at Knoxville Raceway is set for Friday night, April 28. The pristine southern Iowa facility, known as the “Sprint Car Capitol of the World,” has scheduled the WDRL event as part of a big weekend of racing at the facility which also includes a World of Outlaws Sprint Car race the following night, April 29.

The traditional Memorial Day weekend swing will again include stops at Adams County Speedway in Corning, Iowa, I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Nebraska, and West Liberty Raceway. The stop at Adams County Speedway, which has produced thrilling finishes in each of the last two seasons, is set for Saturday night, May 27, with the annual Alphabet Soup Race at I-80 Speedway scheduled for the following night May 28. The three-nights of racing conclude at West Liberty on Memorial Day, May 29.

The eighth annual Masters at Cedar Lake Speedway in New Richmond, Wisconsin will highlight June’s WDRL schedule. This year’s Masters event will be held on June 16 and 17 and will feature $10,000-to-win main events both nights. Last season, fields of over 50 Late Models came through inspection both nights at Cedar Lake. The first of two series stops at Superior Speedway in Superior, Wisconsin will again precede the running of the Masters.

A three night Independence Day weekend swing at Echo Valley Speedway in West Union, Iowa, Bureau County Speedway in Princeton, Illinois, and Davenport Speedway will bring in the month of July, with the much anticipated Pump and Pantry Late Model Nationals at Mid-Nebraska Speedway in Doniphan, Nebraska set for a two-night run on July 21 and 22. The first-ever WDRL event at Boone County Speedway in Albion, Nebraska is set for July 23.

The traditional early August Northern Swing kicks off with the second of two dates at Superior Speedway on Monday, August 7, with the following night finding series drivers making their first-ever appearance at Viking Speedway in Alexandria, Minnesota. Negotiations are currently underway for an August 9 date, with the four-nights of racing concluding at Freeport Raceway Park in Freeport, Illinois on August 10.

After last year’s wildly successful Labor Day weekend event with the United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS) at Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minnesota, the two series’ make a return engagement at the much acclaimed southeast Minnesota speed plant on Saturday September 2. The following night, WDRL regulars make their second of two stops at Bureau County Speedway in Illinois before heading back to Davenport Speedway on September 4.

The final six series events of the 2006 campaign will all be two-night affairs, with the annual Cornhusker Classic at I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Nebraska set for September 22 and 23, the popular Capitol Federal Savings Late Model Showdown at Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kansas City set for the following weekend, September 29 and 30, and the Al Frieden Memorial and Liberty Fall Classic set for Friday and Saturday, October 6 and 7.

This year’s PolyDome Late Model Series schedule, which spans portions of seven months, will find series drivers traveling to six midwestern states.

According to Wilson, additional dates may be added to the schedule in the next few months.

“We feel very good about our schedule as it is,” he noted. “But we will continue discussions with promoters until the first green flag flies in early April.”
