(Cedar Rapids, IA) - Hawkeye Downs Speedway management has announced a big weekend of racing to conclude the 2003 season. Highlighting the event will be the final race of the season for the World Dirt Racing League Polydome super dirt late models.

The weekend will be October 10-12, 2003. Practice will be held Friday, Oct. 10, with preliminary races Saturday, Oct. 11. Feature races will be held Sunday afternoon, Oct. 12.

The event will pay a purse of over $80,000. The winner of the dirt late model feature will take home $12,000. Last place in the 26-car field will make $1,000.

In addition to dirt late models, racing will be held for open competition modifieds, full-frame stock cars, plus Hawkeye Downs late models and sportsmans.

Hawkeye Downs Speedway General Manager Jim Amstutz will team up with Johnny Oberthein of Special K Motorsports to present the event. World Dirt Racing League President Jim Wilson met with Amstutz, Oberthein and Hawkeye Downs Race Committee Chairman Ed Emerson on Thursday to finalize plans.

"People have been telling us we need to run a big end of season race, and this is it," said Amstutz., "We'll have the top dirt late model drivers in the country, settling their championship on an asphalt track. The $12,000 to win will bring in the big names. The $1,000 to start will make the race attractive to the top area drivers."

The World Dirt Racing League began last year, evolving from the NASCAR O'Reilly All-Star Series. Top drivers in the series include Gary Webb, Ray Guss Jr., Brian Birkofer, Dan Schlieper, Terry Phillips, Matt Fuhrman, Skip Frey, Kyle Berck, Donnie McClellan, the Kosiski brothers and the Ekrich nrothers.

There were 188 registered super dirt late models in competition during the 2002 season.

Although details such as start times and format are yet to be determined, the basic plan for the event is in place. The Dirt Late Models will run their regular dirt tires, and the $12,000-to-win feature will be 100 laps. Drivers will qualify for the feature through heat races on Saturday and last chance B-features on Sunday.

Hawkeye Downs Speedway will open its 2003 season on Friday, April 25, and continue weekly racing through Friday, Sept. 12. Complete details of the 2003 schedule will be released soon.

How many of the guys that will go to Eldora would run this one??? Come on people use your heads. Eldora runs UMP rules, WDRL is far from UMP rules.

If this race is on pavement and the cars are to use regular dirt tires, I wonder if the tires will last 100 laps.
