One of the most anticipated seasons in the history of the World of Outlaws will begin on Friday February 9 at Volusia Speedway Park , as part of the 36th Annual DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Mopar Speedshop.

For the first time ever, three nights of racing will be contested by the World of Outlaws at the ultra-fast half-mile, where Chad Kemenah and Joey Saldana were victorious last season in 25-lap A-Features. Kemenah the reigning Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year Award winner led wire-to-wire in the season opener after setting fast time and earning the pole position by virtue of winning the dash. Saldana driving for NASCAR star Kasey Kahne, led one lap, the final lap of the second night to inch-out Jac Haudsenschild before a packed grandstand in one of the most thrilling races of the season.

They were two of the 16 drivers that found their way to the winner’s circle in a very competitive 2006 campaign, with 26 total drivers leading laps over the course of the season. Also, 26 drivers set fast time last season, along the same number winning dashes, and 25 different drivers earned pole positions over the course of the year.

All three nights of the DIRTcar Nationals beginning on February 9 will encompass full racing programs consisting of: time trials, heat races, consolation races, a dash, and an A-Feature. On the first two nights, the A-Feature will be 25 laps, with $8,000 going to the winner each night. The finale on Sunday February 11 will be 30-laps with the victor taking home a check for $12,000. The entire purse for the three days of the event will be over $125,000.

Donny Schatz enters the race as the reigning World of Outlaws Champions. The native of Fargo , North Dakota will be in search of his second career win at Volusia Speedway Park . Also, 20-time Champion Steve Kinser, who hails from Bloomington, Indiana, will be searching for win number two at the half-mile as he returns to compete full-time with the World of Outlaws this season, as he looks to add to his 533 A-Feature triumphs.

In five events at the track, there have been five different winners in World of Outlaws competition, with the first race being held at the facility in 1981.

Volusia Speedway Park is a half-mile track, and last season the series saw 12 different winners in 30 total events on tracks that size, led by Schatz’s seven victories, followed by Saldana’s five, and Craig Dollansky’s four. Also winning on half-miles in 2006 were: Sammy Swindell, Danny Lasoski, Daryn Pittman, Fred Rahmer, Doug Esh, Chad Kemenah, Terry McCarl, Jason Solwold, and Brooke Tatnell.

Of the drivers expected to compete in the DIRTcar Nationals, they account for 22 series titles and over 830 World of Outlaws A-Feature wins, since 1978. Also five former Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year Award winners will be in attendance. Drivers hailing from at least 19 states as well as Australia will be in competition.
