West Burlington, IA— January 12, 2008—After the largest crowd in the history of 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa packed the grandstands last season to see Tony Bruce Jr. capture his first career World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series win, the best sprint car drivers in the world will return to the high-banked 3/8-mile again in 2009 for a full night of racing on Wednesday, July 8.
Bruce led all 35 laps of the event on July 30, 2008, holding off several attempts by 20-time World of Outlaws champion Steve Kinser to take the lead in his first start at the track. Bruce was 23 years of age at the time of the race, and Kinser had already won four World of Outlaws titles and well over 100 races with the series, before the native of Liberal, Kansas was even born.
“It’s unbelievable to lead all 35 laps and to hold off Steve Kinser to win my first World of Outlaws A-main,” said an ecstatic Bruce after the win. “I am so stoked. It will definitely take a few days to sink in. This is amazing. We have been working so hard and to win one means everything.”
After receiving several inches of rain the night before the World of Outlaws debut at 34 Raceway, the track crew along with the staff of SLS Promotions, worked feverously all day the day of the race to make sure the track was in race ready condition as well as the pit area for all of the competitors to work on their machines. For the hand that Mother Nature dealt, it was a yeoman’s effort to get the race. Kinser began the night by setting a new track record in time trials, touring the high banks in 12.250 seconds.
“It’s a nice race track,” Kinser said after the race. “Right at the end it was still a little too fast and too sticky to see a lot of passing, but there was a lot of rain last night.”
Hometown favorite Josh Schneiderman turned in an amazing performance in his first career A-Feature start with the World of Outlaws. The 21-year old had the capacity crowd on their feet for a number of laps, as he kept pace with Bruce and Kinser looking for an upset win. Each time he would thunder down the front straightaway a roar from the crowd erupted as he challenged the leaders.
“I just kept telling myself to not get intimidated,” he explained. “If I started thinking about who that was and what he has accomplished in over 30 years of racing, I knew I would be intimidated. I just kept telling myself to drive my race and I could hear the fans cheer every time we were on the frontstretch and that helped even more.”
The World of Outlaws Late Model Series will also make a stop at 34 Raceway this season on Saturday, May 23.
