QUOTABLE
With less than two months remaining in the 2005 World of Outlaws Sprint
Series season, Steve Kinser has a nearly insurmountable 472-point lead
as he attempts to capture the 20th championship in his career. However,
from second on back there are battles for positions at nearly every
spot. During the Harvest Classic at Calistoga Speedway, the 18
full-time touring drivers discussed where they rank and how competitive
this season has been:
Craig Dollansky, driver of the Karavan Motorsports No. 7
VMAC/Karavan/Fulton Performance Products J&J from Elk River, Minn., who
has two A-feature victories and two preliminary feature wins this
season
On the standings: “Right now we’re just concentrating on winning races.
The point deal became a mute point about two months ago when things
kind of turned against us. We’re just going to concentrate on winning
races and see where we end up in that point chase and work on things
for next year. We all fell well short of the first-place position and
Steve sailed away from everybody.”
On competition in 2005: “I think it’s very competitive. The last time I
saw it like that was 2001. There were 17 teams out here and any of
those teams were capable of winning on any given night. It was similar
to that season to me.”
Tim Kaeding, driver of the Dennis Roth No. 83 Beef Packers Eagle from
San Jose, Calif., who won earlier this season at Sheboygan County Fair
Park and has had much success in his career at Silver Dollar Speedway
On competition in 2005: “Steve’s quick all the time, but you look at
all the teams that were supposed to be good and are struggling right
now. It’s just been one of those rollercoaster years and nobody can get
a hold of anything or get consistent enough week in and week out. A
perfect example is how both the Roth teams have struggled this year. …
You’ve got guys who can qualify good every night like Terry McCarl, for
example. He qualifies good almost every night he goes out there but yet
he has trouble racing his way out of the heat race. He gets stuck in a
heat race that has seven good guys in it and it’s hard to get through a
heat race. I think that’s the biggest thing this year. Everybody
stepped up their program to that next level to try to catch Steve and
Lasoski, but everybody also has had a lot of bad luck. … Now it’s the
end of the year and everybody is scrambling to figure out how to get
another win in by the end of the year.”
Kraig Kinser, second-year driver of the Steve Kinser Racing No. 11k
Remy/Hoosier/Quaker State/Sander/Pilot Travel Centers Maxim from
Bloomington, Ind., who captured the 45th Annual Knoxville Nationals
championship on Aug. 14
On the standings: “You worry about it, but you’ve got to drive a little
bit smarter and maybe not push the envelope at times when you know
you’ve got somebody down in points who is struggling one night. Right
now, you’re still trying run good. Pretty soon everyone will start
looking for points, looking to see what’s realistic to catch somebody
or what you have to do or where you have to finish to keep the guy
behind you away from you.”
On competition in 2005: “There have been a lot of different winners
this year even with dad dominating with all those wins. There has been
a lot of bad luck for some teams and good luck for others. I think it’s
a real good start with all the good cars that are out here and a lot of
guys are capable of winning every night. I’d say any one of the top 15
cars in points has a legitimate shot at winning each night. It’s
definitely a good car count and the quality of the cars this year is so
awesome it makes it tough.”
Steve Kinser, the 19-time series champion and driver of the Steve
Kinser Racing No. 11 Quaker State/Q Oils/Hoosier/Remy/Pilot Travel
Centers Maxim from Bloomington, Ind., who has a series-leading 17
A-feature wins, four preliminary victories and is once again leading
the championship points standings
On the standings: “We’re going to go out and take it race by race and
hope both cars run good. You do worry about it a little bit but there’s
not much you can do to change it. You just go out there and run the
best you can and what happens, happens.”
On competition in 2005: “It has been a pretty competitive season. This
is probably the largest point amount I’ve ever won one by, but it’s
still been a competitive year. We’ve run a little better than the rest
of the field, but the rest of the field has been really, really close.
We’ve been finishing in the top five about every race and that’s
allowed us to get away from them, then we had a streak where we won
quite a few races. Night in and night out, it’s as competitive as it’s
ever been.”
Danny Lasoski, the 2001 series champion and driver of the Tony Stewart
Motorsports No. 20 Bass Pro Shops/Tracker/Pilot Fuel/Mopar/JD
Byrider/Hoosier Eagle who won at Cottage Grove Speedway to go with
three preliminary feature wins this season
On the standings: “I haven’t looked at a points sheet since May. I
couldn’t tell you where I’m at, how far I’m back or nothing. The way I
look at it, if you perform on the racetrack with victories and up-front
finishes then you should be up there. But we’ve been terrible, and by
our standards, the worst.”
On competition in 2005: “It’s probably as competitive as I’ve seen it
but Steve’s had a cakewalk. There hasn’t been anybody to pressure him.
In years past I’ve been there to be a thorn in his side. We’re going to
work awful hard all winter long to see if we can be stronger out of the
gates next year.”
Terry McCarl, a six-time Knoxville Raceway champion and driver of the
McCarl No. 24 Big Game Treestands/Country Builders/Clean-O/Bosma Eagle
On the standings: “You’ve got to block that out of your mind when
you’re on the racetrack. You don’t want to be point racing too much.
I’ve been a car owner for a long time so a lot of times I try to finish
races as it is, maybe not as aggressive as I should be. My
aggressiveness goes up with how much money is in my pocket so sometimes
you might not be overly aggressive if you’re point racing. I think
everybody is about the same. You try to block it out the best you can
then you look at it after the races and block it out the next race.”
Paul McMahan, a California native living in Nashville who drives the
David Helm No. 11H Selma Shell/Garrett Racing Engines/Quality Sound
Maxim
On the standings: “At the end of the night you look at it, but while
you’re racing you don’t look at them at all because if you start
worrying about where you have to get to or how many cars you’ve got to
pass to get to that spot, you usually aren’t racing, you’re more
worried about protecting what you’ve got. I try to keep that in my mind
and race as hard as I can and whatever happens, happens. I want to win
every night and if I can win every night the points will come with it.”
