QUOTABLE
With less than two months remaining in the 2005 World of Outlaws Sprint
Series season, Steve Kinser has a nearly insurmountable 472-point lead
as he attempts to capture the 20th championship in his career. However,
from second on back there are battles for positions at nearly every
spot. During the Harvest Classic at Calistoga Speedway, the 18
full-time touring drivers discussed where they rank and how competitive
this season has been:

Craig Dollansky, driver of the Karavan Motorsports No. 7
VMAC/Karavan/Fulton Performance Products J&J from Elk River, Minn., who
has two A-feature victories and two preliminary feature wins this
season
On the standings: “Right now we’re just concentrating on winning races.
The point deal became a mute point about two months ago when things
kind of turned against us. We’re just going to concentrate on winning
races and see where we end up in that point chase and work on things
for next year. We all fell well short of the first-place position and
Steve sailed away from everybody.”
On competition in 2005: “I think it’s very competitive. The last time I
saw it like that was 2001. There were 17 teams out here and any of
those teams were capable of winning on any given night. It was similar
to that season to me.”

Tim Kaeding, driver of the Dennis Roth No. 83 Beef Packers Eagle from
San Jose, Calif., who won earlier this season at Sheboygan County Fair
Park and has had much success in his career at Silver Dollar Speedway
On competition in 2005: “Steve’s quick all the time, but you look at
all the teams that were supposed to be good and are struggling right
now. It’s just been one of those rollercoaster years and nobody can get
a hold of anything or get consistent enough week in and week out. A
perfect example is how both the Roth teams have struggled this year. …
You’ve got guys who can qualify good every night like Terry McCarl, for
example. He qualifies good almost every night he goes out there but yet
he has trouble racing his way out of the heat race. He gets stuck in a
heat race that has seven good guys in it and it’s hard to get through a
heat race. I think that’s the biggest thing this year. Everybody
stepped up their program to that next level to try to catch Steve and
Lasoski, but everybody also has had a lot of bad luck. … Now it’s the
end of the year and everybody is scrambling to figure out how to get
another win in by the end of the year.”

Kraig Kinser, second-year driver of the Steve Kinser Racing No. 11k
Remy/Hoosier/Quaker State/Sander/Pilot Travel Centers Maxim from
Bloomington, Ind., who captured the 45th Annual Knoxville Nationals
championship on Aug. 14
On the standings: “You worry about it, but you’ve got to drive a little
bit smarter and maybe not push the envelope at times when you know
you’ve got somebody down in points who is struggling one night. Right
now, you’re still trying run good. Pretty soon everyone will start
looking for points, looking to see what’s realistic to catch somebody
or what you have to do or where you have to finish to keep the guy
behind you away from you.”
On competition in 2005: “There have been a lot of different winners
this year even with dad dominating with all those wins. There has been
a lot of bad luck for some teams and good luck for others. I think it’s
a real good start with all the good cars that are out here and a lot of
guys are capable of winning every night. I’d say any one of the top 15
cars in points has a legitimate shot at winning each night. It’s
definitely a good car count and the quality of the cars this year is so
awesome it makes it tough.”

Steve Kinser, the 19-time series champion and driver of the Steve
Kinser Racing No. 11 Quaker State/Q Oils/Hoosier/Remy/Pilot Travel
Centers Maxim from Bloomington, Ind., who has a series-leading 17
A-feature wins, four preliminary victories and is once again leading
the championship points standings
On the standings: “We’re going to go out and take it race by race and
hope both cars run good. You do worry about it a little bit but there’s
not much you can do to change it. You just go out there and run the
best you can and what happens, happens.”
On competition in 2005: “It has been a pretty competitive season. This
is probably the largest point amount I’ve ever won one by, but it’s
still been a competitive year. We’ve run a little better than the rest
of the field, but the rest of the field has been really, really close.
We’ve been finishing in the top five about every race and that’s
allowed us to get away from them, then we had a streak where we won
quite a few races. Night in and night out, it’s as competitive as it’s
ever been.”

Danny Lasoski, the 2001 series champion and driver of the Tony Stewart
Motorsports No. 20 Bass Pro Shops/Tracker/Pilot Fuel/Mopar/JD
Byrider/Hoosier Eagle who won at Cottage Grove Speedway to go with
three preliminary feature wins this season
On the standings: “I haven’t looked at a points sheet since May. I
couldn’t tell you where I’m at, how far I’m back or nothing. The way I
look at it, if you perform on the racetrack with victories and up-front
finishes then you should be up there. But we’ve been terrible, and by
our standards, the worst.”
On competition in 2005: “It’s probably as competitive as I’ve seen it
but Steve’s had a cakewalk. There hasn’t been anybody to pressure him.
In years past I’ve been there to be a thorn in his side. We’re going to
work awful hard all winter long to see if we can be stronger out of the
gates next year.”

Terry McCarl, a six-time Knoxville Raceway champion and driver of the
McCarl No. 24 Big Game Treestands/Country Builders/Clean-O/Bosma Eagle
On the standings: “You’ve got to block that out of your mind when
you’re on the racetrack. You don’t want to be point racing too much.
I’ve been a car owner for a long time so a lot of times I try to finish
races as it is, maybe not as aggressive as I should be. My
aggressiveness goes up with how much money is in my pocket so sometimes
you might not be overly aggressive if you’re point racing. I think
everybody is about the same. You try to block it out the best you can
then you look at it after the races and block it out the next race.”

Paul McMahan, a California native living in Nashville who drives the
David Helm No. 11H Selma Shell/Garrett Racing Engines/Quality Sound
Maxim
On the standings: “At the end of the night you look at it, but while
you’re racing you don’t look at them at all because if you start
worrying about where you have to get to or how many cars you’ve got to
pass to get to that spot, you usually aren’t racing, you’re more
worried about protecting what you’ve got. I try to keep that in my mind
and race as hard as I can and whatever happens, happens. I want to win
every night and if I can win every night the points will come with it.”

.

Jason Meyers, a four-time A-feature winner from Clovis, Calif., and
driver of the Elite Racing Team No. 14 Elite
Landscaping/Pacific-Union/Primerica/Lafferty/Berry/Riverstone/Carter
Maxim who is second in points
On the standings: “I think right now we’re just trying to stay
consistent. We are paying attention to points right now, but for the
sheer fact that of trying to get a little cushion behind us so we can
try some things we might to do next year, start testing some things on
the car. The off-season is very short and there isn’t any time for
testing. The ending of the year is your chance to do that but at the
same time I don’t want to do anything to jeopardize our standings. It’s
very important for us to finish the year real strong.”

Brian Paulus, a two-time A-feature winner from Mechanicsburg, Pa., and
driver of the P&P Motorsports No. 28 Arnold
Transportation/Hank’s/Travel Centers of America/Abbylou.org/
FreakyFlickers.com/Who Monsters Maxim
On the standings: “It’s impossible to say you don’t look at points, but
I expected to be a top-10 in points team and we’re not so 15, 13, 16, I
don’t care. It means nothing to me. Once we were out of the top 10 and
had no chance of getting into it, that was pretty much the end of it.
We’re just racing one night at a time now, trying to pay the bills and
get into next season.”
On competition in 2005: “It has easily been the most competitive year,
maybe not for the top-five guys in points, but for the guys like myself
who were trying to race into the top 10 in points, there have been a
lot of 10th-place cars in points this year. When you have a team like
Brandon Wimmer’s who was struggling and he can run second on any given
night, teams like us who popped off a couple of wins, Jason Solwold’s
team that should have won some races, there’s still time left but
everybody is so darn strong. To finish 14th or 15th in points, we’re
somewhat embarrassed by it because of our expectations but it’s still
very strong considering who we’re racing with.”

Daryn Pittman, a native of Owasso, Okla., and driver of the Titan USA
No. 21 Titan Garages and Carports/Hop-n-Sack Convenience Stores Maxim
who has finished in the top 10 on five of the past seven race nights,
beginning with a victory at BMP Speedway in Billings, Mont.
On the standings: “All year long when people are telling you they’re
not worried about it, they’re all lying to you. We all say the same
thing but you always keep an eye on them. At the end of the year,
that’s what matters and that’s what you take with you over the winter,
where you finished in points. I’m concerned. I feel like we definitely
don’t deserve to be in the top five in points at the end of the year no
matter what happens, but I feel like we should finish seventh or eighth
and if we finish worse than that then I think we’ve done ourselves an
injustice. … Right now I’m not too concerned about it. I think we can
get back up there. We’ve been running awfully strong and been really
consistent so I feel a lot better about being 11th as good as we’re
running right now rather than I would if we were seventh or eighth and
running as bad as we were a couple of months ago. As long as we can
keep going good, I feel like we can cut back off a few more spots. If
we don’t finish in the top 10, it will be a huge blow to everybody’s
confidence over the winter.”
On competition in 2005: “I think definitely, if not more. The points
are pretty tight all the way through. I feel like from seventh to 11th
that it’s never been that close. I feel like we’re all pretty equal
cars. All five cars in those positions have had a string of a couple of
good months and a couple of bad months and it’s evened itself out and I
feel like we’re all pretty much on the same level right now. Every
night when you watch our heat races you see just how tough it is.
Trying to make it out of your heat to get in those dashes is so
critical. There’s never such a thing as an easy night making it out of
your heat race. It’s making everybody a lot better race driver.”

Joey Saldana, the Brownsburg, Ind., driver of the Larry Woodward No. 2
Volcano Joe’s Coffee/Bridgestone presents the Champ Car World Series
powered by Ford Maxim who has a preliminary feature win this season at
Lernerville
On the standings: “If I wouldn’t have [been injured] at Eagle, I’d
worry about it. But if you don’t run in the top 10 in points the money
is a significant drop-off. It really doesn’t matter for us. We’re just
out trying to win a race and we’re running out of time. If
circumstances were a little bit different for us, we could be sitting
about seventh in the points if that hadn’t happened. Then I’d probably
be thinking about it. Now I’m just trying to win a race.”

Donny Schatz, driver of the Schatz Motorsports No. 15
ParkerStores/Bellerud/Petro Shopping Centers J&J from Fargo, N.D., who
has won six A-feature events, including two of the past three
On the standings: “If we were racing for a championship it would
probably be one thing, but we’re not racing for a championship so we’re
just trying to get everything we can. You just do what you can. I’ve
never been a real avid points racer and some nights I think I’m smarter
by not being that. Hopefully we won’t be in this position next year.”
On competition in 2005: “Steve ran away but everybody else had some
troubles along the line. Danny hasn’t really started running good until
the last week here. We were hitting and missing too often. There were
too many guys that are hitting and missing. Nobody was that consistent
other than Steve all year long. He’s got it wrapped up. All he’s got to
do is show up and he probably has it in the bag, but that’s not him,
either. He’s going to race every last one and that’s why he’s the
champion.”

Tim Shaffer, driver of the Lonny Parson’s No. 6 Casey’s General
Stores/Housby/VOCON Maxim from Aliquippa, Pa., who counts the Silver
Cup among his three A-feature wins this season
On the standings: “After Knoxville, usually not much changes but this
year there are three or four spots that are pretty close. Most guys
will tell you they don’t worry about it but everybody does. You try not
to focus on that because you need to focus on what you’re doing that
night.”
On competition in 2005: “I can’t imagine how many provisionals were
used this year. That shows how competitive it is. When you bring 18
cars with us and then you go any place that has nine, 10, 12 good cars,
it makes it very tough. It makes it tough even when you have 18 in the
mix with the inversion in the heats and stuff. You’ve got to make
something happen. There’s no sitting around and cruising around and
taking your spot. You’ve got to sit up in the seat and make it happen.”

Jason Sides, driver of the Sides Motorsports No. 7S Wetherington
Tractor Service/Mafia Motorsports Maxim from Bartlett, Tenn., who has
finished in the top 10 on four of the past five race nights
On the standings: “I have not even looked in the past six, seven, eight
weeks. In the beginning of the year, if you start out good then you’ll
probably run through the year pretty good. At this point, it doesn’t
matter. All we want to do now is win a race. The points have taken care
of themselves.”
On competition in 2005: “That adds to the points situation. Any time
you go to Williams Grove and some of the good cars miss the show, that
makes the points real tight.”

Jason Solwold, driver of the Lon Carnahan No. R19 Citywide
Insulation/Owens-Corning/BG Automotive Schnee from Mt. Vernon, Wash.,
who is battling for the Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year Award
On the standings: “I think everybody is [concerned about points].
Everybody wants to move up before the end of the year. The points will
take care of themselves. I don’t worry too much about the points
because usually you don’t have any control over it.”
On competition in 2005: “It’s the most competitive thing I’ve done by
far, and the people who have been out here for a long time say the same
thing. There are a number of cars that can win on any night even if
Steve Kinser is still pretty dominant.”

Shane Stewart, driver of the Rudeen Racing powered by mIn Motorsports
No. 26 Snap-on Tools/Wesmar Engines Maxim from Bixby, Okla., who earned
a victory in qualifying action during the Knoxville Nationals and leads
the race for the Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year Award
On the standings: “It’s still one of my main goals to finish in the
top-10 in points and I still think we have a chance, there are still
enough races to run good in to do that. We have to get our program
turned around, start running back in the top 10, and if we do that then
everything will just work itself out. Solwold’s been running in front
of me the past few races so I’m going to have my hands full with him as
far as the rookie of the year deal goes, too.”

Brooke Tatnell, driver of the Rush Racing No. 8
Bombardier/Castrol/Steel Dreams/Easy Rider’s Cafe Eagle from San Souci,
NSW, Australia, who has two A-feature victories and a preliminary win
this season
On the standings: “Everybody is worried about points night in and night
out. The only one who says he isn’t is Steve Kinser because he’s
leading the thing. What we’re going through right now is what a lot of
people went through at the start of the year, a lot of bad luck. We’ve
gone from having a career year to struggling to finish a race, let
alone get back to our top-five finishes. We’re doing nothing different
now than what we’ve done all year long but the circumstances in racing
you just can’t change.”
On competition in 2005: “This time of year is usually when you see a
lot of guys who haven’t won a race win their first race because points
are usually sorted out by now. You might see one or two guys battling
for a position, but right now you’ve got guys battling from sixth
through 12th for a position that could change throughout the rest of
the year.”

Brandon Wimmer, driver of the Two Winners Racing No. 7TW Astro
Titanium/Gaerte/MOPAR/Butlerbuilt/Abbylou.org Maxim from Fairmont,
Ind., who is running for the Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year Award
On the standings: “You think about it, but once the race starts points
are the last thing you think about. You’re just out there to win that
race. If you’re within a couple of points and it’s down to Dodge City
or Las Vegas, you’re going to start thinking about it then but we still
have about 20 shows and 20 shows is a long time.”
On competition in 2005: “It’s definitely been as competitive as I
thought it would be, if not even more. There are 18 full-time teams and
they’re all good and then we show up to local tracks and there are five
to 10 good cars that can run with us there. It’s something you have to
get used to and you have to do good every time you hit the track or one
of those other cars are going to be right there to get around you. You
can’t take a break out here with this many guys that are good out
traveling full-time. You always have to be on top of your game.”
