Colorado Springs, CO – DATE, 2005 – By Chris Marquart, World Of Outlaws Stacker 2® LM Series
With the previous course of the season, it hadn’t been done. With this caliber of racing talent, it couldn’t be done. With that much competitive fire, it wouldn’t be done.
But Tim McCreadie did it. Finally, for the first time this season, a driver won back-to-back World of Outlaws Stacker 2 ® Late Model Series ® events, winning the make-up Stanley Schetrompf Memorial 30-lap main at Hagerstown Speedway Friday July 8. Saturday night, July 9, McCreadie returned to victory lane in the 58-lap event, celebrating Hagerstown Speedway’s 58th Anniversary.
“For two nights in a row, everything was good,” McCreadie said. “We didn't make mistakes on tires and we made smart decisions. We tried some new things and we struggled in the show, but I thought we were making progress. The whole package now is pretty good and hopefully we can keep it going.”
McCreadie passed through the heats with minimal success on Friday, left to make the feature by way of the consolation event. He won, starting 17th on the feature grid. Needing to pass two cars per lap to score the win, McCreadie went to work on the top of the speedway. He made the decisive pass off the fourth turn as the white flag was to be displayed. Saturday, McCreadie whipped to the point by lap seven after starting eighth. Chub Frank battled back in the middle stages, but McCreadie regained his composure and wheeled away. A lap 55 yellow set up a three-lap dash, but neither Frank nor Steve Francis could muster anything for him.
“It's a joy to be out here racing with these guys, they are the best in the business. Anytime you can get a win against these guys, you cherish it,” McCreadie said. “We've been fortunate. With the engines, we're a lot better than we used to be. Hopefully, we don't have to talk about that any more and we can move on. The program is together and they're running good for us.”
McCreadie is the winningest driver on the tour this year, collecting four wins to push his Sweeteners’ Plus-AC Speedworld CC Performance-powered Rocket chassis Pontiac Grand Prix no. 39 to sixth in points, some 74 markers off Billy Moyers’ pace.
“We’ve got three good runs,” McCreadie said. “We need to keep this up and dig out of this hole we’re in. We’ll take this and build on it.”
Davey Johnson to Rocket Rides, To Run Ohio’s Sharon Speedway
Davey Johnson registered a great run Saturday night at Hagerstown Speedway. But, he had to turn a lot of laps to show the feature field he had a good piece. After racing through his heat, Johnson was delegated to the consolation event, hoping to finish in the top three and make the feature cut.
Johnson ran away with the first of two B-mains, winning the event and starting the feature 17th. From there, he rolled up to a solid sixth-place finish.
“This is the first weekend we ran the Rocket car halfway decent,” Johnson said. “We're feeling good about it. We're making some changes and getting into the Rocket and out of the MasterSbuilt and getting off the American Racers and onto the Hoosiers. It's a learning process for the next month or two, but we're gaining on it.”
As the race wore on, the speedway began to slick over, turning blacker and blacker in the entrance to the corners. This played into Davey Johnson’s strategy.
“The blacker the track got, the better,” Johnson said. “At first, I thought it wasn't going to be pretty. But, as the place started slowing down, it got better. That's what we were banking on.”
Johnson plans to run with the Outlaws more through the end of summer. He promised he would not miss the show at Sharon Speedway in Hartford, Ohio this Tuesday.
“We won that show last year, so we’ll certainly be there,” Johnson said. “Here, we needed 158 laps and we might have been better, but we’ll take the top six and head on to Ohio.”
Balzano Rolls to Solid Showing at Hagerstown Speedway
Mike Balzano was another car that was shuffled to the consolation event, racing to a win in the B-main. He started 18th and placed 12th at the finish.
“We had a better car than where we finished,” Balzano surmised. “We were good enough to win the consi. I thought we should have had a top six or eight car, but the motor started missing and we missed it a little on tires.”
Balzano showed the Biscotti’s Restaurant Rocket Monte Carlo was maneuverable, working around cars on both the high and low lines. In the late going, the right front tire started to fade, limiting the steering ability of the car in the entrance of the corners. It resulted in a pushing condition, which allowed a few cars to slip under Balzano at the end of the event.
However, with the good run under his belt, Balzano will head north and west to the Sharon Speedway in Hartford, OH Tuesday.
“I know the car is good,” Balzano said. “We’ll take it and move on to the next show.”
NOTES: Wednesday, July 6 – Delaware International Speedway – Delmar, DE
Darrell Lanigan overcame the bad luck that has plagued the Gotta Race-Lanigan Auto Sports Rocket no. 29 for a stellar run at Delaware International Speedway. Lanigan powered around Elliott on lap 26 in the 50-lap main, sprinting away for his second win of the year. Tim McCreadie came up for second ahead of Scott Bloomquist. Bloomquist was hoping his voo doo spells would work again; it was just over a week ago when Bloomquist stole win from Lanigan at the Bridgeport Speedway as Lanigan had a front control arm break.
Richard Jarvis Jr., the local point leader at Delaware International Speedway, set the fast time at Delaware International Speedway Tuesday night. Jarvis led a solid effort for the local stars in the Delaware-Maryland swing.
Crowd favorite Ricky Elliott was running strong at Delaware, but he would eventually lose a cylinder and place 14th.
“We got passed and my style isn’t to settle for second,” Elliott said. “I was trying hard to get by Lanigan. I got next to him, but I didn’t want to run over him. He and I have had some good racing all over the northeast these last few weeks. That’s what impresses me. No one drives over anyone else. They respect you out there. I’m looking at running the Late Model full time next year.
Anthony Rushing, a regular at Delaware from Mississippi, won his heat and placed 22nd in the main. He hosted a fantastic battle with Scott Bloomquist in the feature before falling from contention.

NOTES: Friday, July 8 – Hagerstown Speedway – Hagerstown, MD “The 24th Annual Stanley Schetrompf Memorial”
For the second time this year, Tim McCreadie started outside the top 15 in the feature and raced to victory. In South Dakota, McCreadie used 50-laps to move from dead last to win his second race of the year. Last Friday, McCreadie lined up 17th with just 30-laps to catch Billy Moyer, Steve Francis and Ricky Elliott. While Francis and Elliott traded the lead some six times at the line, McCreadie made the final pass on the outside line off the fourth turn with one lap to go. Elliott placed second ahead of Francis.
The win was worth $5,000, but YJ Stinger added a $5,000 bonus for the winner, making McCreadie’s mad 30-lap dash worth $10,000.
Francis was back in his ‘favorite car’ Friday night. The car was used at Ransomville Speedway two weeks ago, and then returned to Rocket Chassis Fabrication in Shinnston, WV to be ‘gone through.’ Apparently, the fixes worked as Francis had his best finish on the New York swing.
Billy Moyer set a new track record in qualifying, lapping the half-mile in 18.097 seconds at 99.464 mph.
Davey Johnson placed ninth, multi-time track champion Nathan Durboraw posted an 11th-place effort. Jason Covert rang up a consolation main win and finished 21st in the main.

NOTES: July 9 – Hagerstown Speedway – Hagerstown, “The 58th Annual Hagerstown Anniversary Classic”
On a changing race track, Tim McCreadie was unstoppable, a mere mortal, and then unstoppable again in the 58-lap Hagerstown Anniversary Classic. McCreadie started 8th and had the lead by lap seven, but gave up the top spot in traffic on lap 28. Chub Frank took the lead, but was jammed in lapped traffic. McCreadie’s car was more maneuverable in traffic, which gave him more racing options as he diced through traffic. The options carried him back to the lead on lap 31. Steve Francis gave chase in third, racing side-by-side with Frank as the duo tried to reel McCreadie in. A lap 55 yellow offered a crack at the top spot, but McCreadie made no mistakes, taking his second win in a row and pocketing the $15,000 winners’ share. In 88 laps worth of work, McCreadie banked $25,000.
Shane Clanton had one of his best showings since returning from surgery. He timed in the top four in qualifying, won his heat from the pole and won the pole dash. He backed up through the main, placing eighth. Davey Johnson came up for sixth after winning his consolation main.
Frankie Plessinger, of Big Cove Tannery, PA, was one of the top performing locals, racing to 16th. He had a strong night at the wheel of the no. 9P.Alan Sagi, who typically drivers the Gary Dyer Enterprises no. 7NY, was added to the feature as a 25th starter. Sagi, a top point getter on the local circuit, was driving Steve LeBaron’s back-up no. 8 car as the no. 7NY was wrecked in an accident last Saturday. He placed 19th. Allen Brannon (14th) also made the main; David Williams raced to 20th ahead of Jeremy Miller, Nathan Durboraw, Gary Stuhler, Jackie Boggs and Daryl Hills.
Durboraw made a daring move in his heat race to take the win. With Darrell Lanigan breaking up in the third turn, Durboraw swung wide while Steve Francis took the low line. Durboraw emerged with the lead. He won, went to the pole dash and placed fourth. In the feature, he was caught up in a pair of accidents and placed 22nd.

Finishing Order: 6/8/05 – Hagerstown Speedway – Hagerstown, MD 30 Lap Feature - $5,000 To Win

Jason Covert; 22. Jeremy Miller; 23. Clint Smith: 24. Frank Plessinger; 25. Andy Anderson.
