FULTON, N.Y. (Sept. 30) – Newly-crowned ButlerBuilt Eastern Region champion Mike Smith did something he hadn’t since 2006 when he scored the win in the World Products Empire State Series feature for IMCA Modifieds at Fulton Speedway Friday evening.
Pole sitter Chris Fleming jumped out to the lead at the drop of the green but Smith, who started fourth, was quick to apply the pressure and took the lead on lap three.
Smith then opened a growing advantage as the laps ticked away until the first caution on lap 15.
At that point it was Smith in front with Gary Roberts, Mike Wilmot, Fleming and Kevan Cook round¬ing out the top five. As the green flew, Smith again took command as field battled behind him.
A scramble changed third through fifth as Cook moved up to third, Wilmot back to fourth and Flem¬ing to fifth. Smith opened up a comfortable lead again until spun cars brought out cautions on laps 21 and 22.
From there on it was all green as Smith cruised to the $400 win, his first on the circuit since June 25, 2006 at Utica-Rome Speedway.
Roberts held on to second with Cook third. Pete Neff charged up from his 16th place start to finish fourth and Jim Walsh was fifth.
Eddie Sites maintained his lead in the series point standings with a seventh place showing.
Don Newell Jr. received the North Country Custom Rookie of the Race Award, Neff won the MR Graphix Hard Charger award and Brian Holder won the MR Graphix Random Draw Award.
