CONCORD, NC (October 12) – Tyler Walker was 2 2/3 laps from sweeping the Charlotte Outlaw Championship Saturday at The Dirt Track @ Lowe’s Motor Speedway when disaster struck. His flat right rear tire gave Daryn Pittman the lead.

Pittman, who passed Craig Dollansky just seconds before, restarted in first place and beat Danny Lasoski under the checkered flag by 10 car-lengths to claim the $12,000 first prize.

“My guys – Joe Gaerte, Bob Curtis, and Sean Young – gave me a great car tonight,” Pittman said, “My hat’s off to Tyler Walker. He probably had the fastest car the whole weekend – that was pretty obvious – but we’re just happy to get a win. I was really glad we got by (Craig) Dollansky when we did, because that was the only lap that was scored before Tyler stopped over there, and it gave us the lead. We probably had the second-fastest car tonight, and it really means a lot for us to get a win down here. This is one of the nicest facilities we come to all year long, and the atmosphere with the big track right next door is just awesome.”

Pittman’s sixth main event victory of the season pushed him into a tie with Danny Wood for 11th place in the point standings with six events remaining on the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series’ 2002 schedule.
Pittman narrowly beat First Heat Race winner Jac Haudenschild across the finish line in Friday’s Preliminary Feature for the final guaranteed starting position in Saturday’s O’Reilly’s Auto Parts Dash. The defending World of Outlaws Gumout Series champion followed Walker and Tim Shaffer across the finish line in Saturday’s O’Reilly Auto Parts Dash for the right to start the 30-lap main event inside the second row.

Walker burst into the lead as the green flag fell in the “A” Feature. Ring and pinion problems in the #83 Beef Packers Eagle forced Shaffer to stop in turn two and a collision involving “B” Feature winner Jim Nier and fast qualifier Greg Hodnett sent Nier crashing into the retaining wall in the fourth corner brought back the original start, however. Hodnett, who swept the Outlaws Showdown at The Dirt Track @ Lowe’s Motor Speedway in late May, continued racing and restarted outside the second row. Walker drove C&W Motorsports’ #35 Eagle into the lead when the green flag replaced the yellow.

Mark Kinser, who won the first three main events the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series ran at The Dirt Track @ Lowe’s Motor Speedway, crashed with Jac Haudenschild in turn two three laps later. Kinser’s crew replaced his broken front axle, but the #5M Mopar Maxim wouldn’t fire when the race resumed.

Hodnett and Donny Schatz exchanged seventh place during the lap following the restart, then Ricky Logan brought out the caution flag when he spun in the third corner. “The Wild Child” passed Schatz again as the green flag replaced the yellow, only to have Stevie Smith pass both Schatz and Haudenschild with a high move between turns three and four late in the seventh lap.

Walker was a half-straightaway ahead of Dollansky when he entered lapped traffic late in the 12th lap. The 2002 World of Outlaws Gumout Series champion increased his advantage to a full straightaway within six laps and was half a lap ahead midway through lap 23.

Pittman steered Sher-Don Motorsports’ #21 Hop & Sac J&J to the rim between the first and second corners to pass Dollansky for second place three laps later. Lasoski used a similar move to pass Dollansky heading into turn four later in the 26th lap.

Walker, who swept the 1998 Western World Championships at Manzanita Speedway, lost his bid to sweep the second double-feature event of his career when his right rear tire lost air pressure early in lap 27. Mechanical problems in the #15 Parker Stores J&J forced Schatz to surrender eighth place during the caution period. The right rear tires on Dollansky’s and Smith’s cars were losing air pressure, but they chose to race on them during the final four laps rather than give up their positions.

Johnny Herrera passed Smith and Dollansky with high moves through the first and second corners during the 27th and 29th laps to claim fourth place.

Pittman controlled the final restart coasted to the victory as Lasoski recorded his ninth runner-up run of the year.

“I feel a little beat up today,” said Lasoski, whose right leg was injured by a dirt clod during Friday’s Fourth Heat Race, “but Tony Stewart put a great race team together and my guys have done a great job and worked hard all year long and they never gave up on me. Daryn was in the right place at the right time, and he had the clean air out in front. We probably used up our tires trying to keep up with Daryn and Craig, but we got a decent finish tonight and we’re going to come back here and try to win one at this place the next time.”

Saldana finished in third place, ahead of Herrera, Dollansky, Hodnett, 19th-starting Steve Kinser, Shane Stewart, Smith and Third Heat Race winner Brad Furr.

The Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series will sanction the 29th Annual Winter Nationals at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, TX, Saturday and run a $51,600 event at State Fair Speedway in Oklahoma City, OK, Sunday. WoO
