Lebanon,Mo.-Defending I-44 LateModel Champion Brad Looney returned home to celebrate the Holiday Weekend in style as he came charging from the 6th row to overtake Joey Mack on the 19th lap and claim his third feature win of the season before a capacity crowd at the Lebanon I-44 Speedway Sat.Night.
The field of 34 LateModels were finally brought down into a starting grid of 22 through some very tough qualifying heats and a B feature. As the field came down for the green,Lebanon's Tony Jackson Jr. set on the pole with MARS regular Joey Mack to his outside.Jackson headed the star-studded field into turn 1 with Mack quickly going downstairs and taking the early lead as Scott Drake,Ken Essary, and Leslie Essary trailed. On lap 2,the first yellow waved as Jackson looped it off turn 2 as Leslie Essary had powered to the runner-up spot.On the restart,Mack again jumped to the low side with L.Essary,Drake,K.Essary,Jerry Buck, and Justin Wells all battling for posistion. On lap 5,Leslie powered to the high-side and began reeling in the leader Mack.Mack and L.Essary then battled side-by-side with the top spot exchanging 4 times before the red came out on lap 9 for Gary Stolba and TJ Kuykendall in turn 4.Stolba would head to the pits and return at the end of the field. On the restart,Mack decided to forgo the bottom of the track and move upstairs as Leslie Essary and Scott Drake were battling for second place.Back in the pack, row 6 starters Brad Looney and Arkansas Jeff Floyd were quietly moving up into the top 8 picking off cars one at a time.Leslie would try Mack several times until on lap 12,he began to fade in the pack as Drake now began his charge as Looney had now moved into the top 5 as Ken Essary and Jerry Buck were battling for position.Looney's charge found him moving around Drake on lap 14 and reeling in the leader Mack.On lap 15 the duo battled side-by-side and with Mack holding the inside line and Looney moving in the middle. It was on lap 17 that Looney finally took over control, but the race was red flagged as pole setter Tony Jackson Jr.smacked the wall in turn 4 and destroying his racer.Jackson was able to walk away safely, but did go into the ambulance to be checked over.On the restart with Mack in the lead again,Looney began his battle as Drake had moved into contention back in third.Mack and Looney again battled back and forth until lap 19,when Looney made the winning pass in turn 2 running the middle lane as Mack stayed close behind. As the race finished strong under green conditions,Looney claimed the 1200 to win prize money as he was followed by Mack,Drake, Jerry Buck and Shane Essary in the top 5.
The Modified feature saw defending champion Erik Maggard move around leader Steve Martin on lap 5 and was never headed in claiming his third feature win of the season.Behind the winner was a tight battle for position as Martin held on to gather the runner-up spot followed closely by Rex Merritt, point leader Eric Hudson, and Jesse Stovall at the finish.Nascar Craftsman Truck Series driver Carl Edwards came home in the 6th spot after a race long battle with Stovall and Terry Beckham II.Early contenders Jamie Ragland and Steve Picou fell by the wayside with problems in the middle stages of the race.
Larry Prewitt continued his winning way in the Superstock feature, but it wasn't without a heavy challange. As the green fell on this 15 lap feature,Richland's Jason Otto jumped out to the early lead with Fred McAdams in tow followed by Josh Woody, Matt Pilant, and Tim Petty.Otto had opened up a big lead until lap 6 when TR Phillips spun in turn 4 bringing out the yellow. On the restart Woody and Pilant were battling for second as Tim Petty pulled in with problems taking him out of contention.Otto continued to pull away, but Pilant scrapped the frontstretchwall and collected runner-up Woody in the process taking both of them out of action. On the restart,Otto would find the point leader Prewitt right on his bumper and after a spirited battle,Prewitt would take to the high-side and record his 11th straight win over a 20 car field.Following Prewitt to the stripe was early leader Otto,Steve Sanders,Jerry Ballinger, and Shawn Danuser at the finish.
Kevin Brown finally overcame I-44 bad luck and grabbed the lead early and then held off repeated challanges from Jordan Holloway in claiming the FactoryStock feature.Following the lead duo to the line were point leader Micheal Maggard,Steve Schulta, and Josh Franklin to the flags in a wild affair for them tonight.
Dusty Rhoades took the lead early in the Bomber feature and held off a late race surge from Brandon Knutdson in gathering the victory.Following the lead dup to the line were point leadr KC Prettyman,Derrick Peterson, and Justin Foust at the stripe.
Over 130 cars checked-into the pits as the Lebanon Daily Record,Dennis Elmore's Qulaity Heating and Cooling, and Central Bank provided the area with a beautiful fireworks display at intermission, and Carl Edwards was able to hold his special autograph session for 1 hour despite being late to the track because of his victory in the NASCAR Truck Series Race at the Kansas Speedway.Edwards who arrived at the track at 7:30,raced the modified in his heat, and then turned his attention to the autograph session as he stayed signing until every fan in line got his signature.Special guest speakers John T.Russell and Kit Bond provided a very nice opening ceremony despite a 5 minute rain shower that fell on the speedway around 6PM.
