LEBANON - Lebanon I-44 Speedway saw its second season race come to a head with Will Vaught becoming a two-time champion in the Late Model class Saturday night.
Vaught, a senior in high school at Crane, held the top position all of the Late Model feature race, but said getting there was challenging.
"I had a pretty tough heat race," Vaught said, "started last, finished second."
Vaught lined up for the 12-car feature second, with T.J. Kuykendall starting pole. Vaught overtook Kuykendall quickly, dropping him to the third position by lap three. Shane Essary pushed from the No. 4 position to take second.
Brad Looney, who started the feature11th, came out strong taking the high side and by the fifth lap, passed Kuykendall, earning him the third spot.
Essary was close behind Vaught in lap 15, but couldn't push through the lap traffic. He took a jump in the track allowing Looney to pass him for the No. 2 spot.
Vaught said Looney was actually the one who built his car and gave him a lot of credit.
"Brad took a lot of time with it," he said, "designing it and all that. He did a good job with it."
With high hopes of going Nextel one day, Vaught said his sponsors kept him going.
"I couldn't do it without them," said Vaught.
In a special feature race, the Modified class raced for a $600 purse. Erik Maggard and brother, Brandon Maggard, both of Springfield, took the top two spots.
The 20-lap feature started 24 cars with Kevin Halderman starting pole. In one lap, Erik Maggard sped to the top spot, followed by Rex Merritt, 2004 Modified Champion Eric Hudson, and Steve Martin. A red flag due to a pile-up in turn four stopped the action temporarily.
Hudson had made a tough climb from the No. 9 position to third, but was knocked back to ninth.
After lap 11, Erik Maggard still held the lead followed by Merritt, Brandon Maggard and Jeff Cutshaw. Merritt then passed Erik Maggard on lap 15 to take the top position, but fell back and was passed on lap 17 by Brandon Maggard.
With two laps remaining, Cutshaw came from the inside on turn three to pass Merritt, stealing the third spot, leaving the Maggard brothers from Springfield to top the feature.
Factory Stocks had a difficult time getting the feature racing. On the second original restart, Jim Cox took a bad turn on some loose dirt on the inside track, overturning his car. Cox was airlifted to Springfield for a severe hand injury.
After three original restarts and a single-file start, Jordan Holloway, of Monett won the Factory Stock feature.
Steve Morton took first in the Super Stocks feature. Justin Foust took first in the Bomber class and Randy Galloway won the Pro-4 feature.
Racing will continue next Saturday night with Factory Stocks, Late Models, Super Stocks, Modifieds, 305 Sprint Cars and Bombers. Gates open at 5 p.m.; races start at 7:30 p.m.
