Lebanon I-44 Speedway
LEBANON, Mo. - The Stacker 2 Mid America Racing Series invaded the Lebanon I-44 Speedway for an exciting 34-car Super Late Model feature race Saturday night. Springfield's Terry Phillips took home the $3,000 first-place prize.
Phillips, who is one of the headliners in MARS, came back to Lebanon I-44 Speedway for what some might call his "home crowd." Phillips got his racing start in Lebanon and said coming back was a good feeling.
"I like racing at home," Phillips said after his first MARS win of the season. "We got a lot of following; it's nice, and when you win, it makes it extra nice."
The cars came out for the exhilarated crowd and lined up in a 4-car wide position for a one lap tour and then took their starting positions. Phillips received the JFR Graphics pole award for most passing points of the evening and started the feature race in the pole position.
Odie Green started the 40-lap feature second, followed by Bill Frye, Will Vaught and Wendell Wallace, who is the MARS points-leader.
After a tight start, Phillips dropped his pole position to third as Frye took the lead and Wallace followed for second.
On the sixth lap, Wallace made a run for the top spot to keep the race for the lead close. Wallace, Frye and Phillips all brought the lead to three-wide at times on the ninth and 10th laps.
After a double-file restart on lap 12, Phillips passed Frye for the second place position and kept close to Wallace. Wallace took the inside of the track to keep Phillips at bay, but made the critical move to the outside, allowing Phillips to creep in for first on the 17th lap.
As Phillips pulled away from the pack, Vaught, Jon Vandenburg and Jack Sullivan battled for 4th place. Sullivan proved the strongest of the three and received fourth in the feature, followed by Vaught, then Vandenburg.
On lap 28, Frye passed Wallace and held the second position until the end of the race. Phillips won by nearly an entire straightaway length.
Frye was pleased with his performance at the Speedway and said the series helped put on a really good race for the evening.
"I think we had a shot of winning it," Frye said, "when I jumped off the back straightaway and landed again and did something to the front end - had to straddle it some - so I'm happy with second. I can live with that. We had a good race track, it had a few holes on it, but it was racy and you could race on it. It was a really good show."
After winning the Late Model feature, Phillips jumped into his Modified car and battled it out yet again in the feature race. He started the race in the second position followed by Erik Maggard and Steve Picou.
Brandon Maggard started the Modified feature in the pole position. Brother Erik Maggard got a quick jump on the start to overtake Phillips for second.
Rex Merritt made a push from fifth to third, then continued to run three-wide with Phillips and Erik Maggard. Terry Beckham Jr. also came from the sixth position to put pressure on the leaders.
Phillips was in top competition until he was nudged out of the cushion on turns one and two of the speedway on the sixth lap. Brandon Maggard still held the lead, followed by Merritt, Beckham and Erik Maggard.
Merritt continued the pressure on the inside as Beckham took a large lead starting on the ninth lap. Brandon Maggard fell to third on the 10th lap.
Jesse Stovall also was a contender at the end of the feature. Starting in the seventh position, Stovall came to take third on lap 16, only to fall back to fourth on the next lap.
Beckham, of Joplin, held his earned position until the end. Merritt attempted a comeback for first on the last remaining laps, but fell short as the checkered flag waved.
Beckham, whose car had just undergone a body and color change, gave credit to his suspension system.
"We changed the suspension when we come up here a week ago," Beckham said, "and it was better. Changed it again, and we actually had it for the first time last night, went to Tulsa and won with it there and came here. We didn't do anything but put fuel in it. I made a few adjustments and I put it right back and everything just fell together."
Phillips admitted his Modified performance wasn't stellar, but said he could see improvement with more races.
"In the Modified, I was just aggravated," he said, "and the car wasn't real good. I was just running around out there, trying different lanes."
Tim Brown, of Stoutland, held the lead the entire Factory Stock race, going home with the $400 first-place prize. Lebanon's Tony Jackson Jr. took home the $400 Super Stock prize. James Flood became a two-time winner in the Bomber division.
