Mark Burgtorf

By Jack Walbring

Mark Burgtorf, Vance Wilson, Wyatt Lance and Michael Larson took feature events wins at Quincy Raceways during Poage Auto Plaza Night at the Races.

Clint Kirkham was the early leader in the Budweiser IMCA Late Model feature event by pacing the first six laps from his front row starting spot but Mike Karhoff slipped past for the lead on the seventh lap. Karhoff lead only one lap as Mark Burgtorf blasted his way into the lead on the eighth lap from his fifth row starting spot and never was threatened on his way to an emotional victory lane. Burgtorf dedicated the win to the late Brent Slocum, a former Quincy Raceways Late Model Track Champion, who was killed in a pit accident at Burlington Iowa’s 34 Raceway Saturday evening. Kirkham settled for second with Denny Woodworth in third, Terry Schlipman in fourth and Brian Kenning in fifth. Kirkham, Karhoff and Dustin Neese took the heat race wins with Denny Woodworth grabbing the hardware in the Summy Tire and Auto Center Trophy Dash. Burgtorf now leads Lonnie Bailey by 20 points in the chase for the track championship.

Vance Wilson had lady luck shining on him this week as he slipped and spun to the infield on the first lap of the Miller Lite A-Modified feature event. Wilson pulled back onto the track after the field has passed him by just in time to watch the caution flag come out for another incident in turn four, allowing him to restart the event from his front row starting spot. Wilson the proceeded to hold off the challenges of Henry Delonjay and his father, Gary Wilson to take his first A-Modified win this year at Quincy. The event was time limited to twelve laps as numerous cautions slowed the action. Delonjay settled for second with Gary Wilson in third, Ted Allen in fourth and Brandon Lennox in fifth. Danny Lake and Vance Wilson were the heat race winners. Delonjay now holds a 14 point margin over Brandon Lennox in the race for the Miller Lite A Modified points battle.

Wyatt Lance was the class of the field in the B Modified division as he came from his third row starting spot to take the lead on lap six of the 20 lap feature event. Lance built as much as a full straightaway lead over the field until a couple of late race cautions brought the field closer together. Tony Dunker made a run at Lance during those last laps but was unable to catch Lance and had to settle for the second spot followed by Joe Bliven in third, Robbie Reed in fourth and Terry Houston in fifth. Bliven and Dunker were the heat race winners. Lance stretched his points advantage to 21 over Joe Hooper.

Michael Larson is making his case for the points championship in the Bomber division as he picked up his third feature event win this season in the very competitive class. Larson grabbed the lead away from Nick Meyer on the eleventh circuit after starting on the outside of the fourth row. Adam Birck made a run at Larsen but had to settle for second followed by Steve Carlin in third, Eddie Dieker in fourth and Todd Reichert in fifth. Matt Burgtorf, Larsen and Meyer all took heat race wins.

Quincy Raceways will be back in action on Sunday, June 19 with Father’s Night at the Races sponsored by Miller Lite/Mississippi Belle Distributing.
