Quincy, IL (Aug 10 2005) The Northern Allstar Late Model Series (NALMS) 2005 Midwest Speedweek opened up Wednesday night at Quincy Raceways, a ¼ mile semi-banked speedplant just outside of Quincy, IL. Twenty-four of the fastest drivers in the Midwest signed in to try their hand at the $2500 top prize, but only one could claim that prize. That one turned out to be Carpentersville, IL native Dennis Erb Jr. in his Malcuit Racing Engines powered Petroff Towing, B&K Sportswear, AFCO Racing Products, Hoosier Racing Tire, Petersen Aluminum Corporation, Reaber Transport sponsored CJ Rayburn Racecar.

Three heat races would transfer 5 each to the 30 lap main event, 3 more would be added from the conciliation race, with 2 NALMS provisionals and 1 track provisional completing the 21 car field. The first heat saw Steve Barnett take the point early and pull away to a 5 car length win after fending off several early challenges from Kevin Weaver. Weaver, Ed Dixon, Joe Ross Jr., and Rodney Melvin rounded out the top 5. In the second heat it was all Randy Korte as he sped away to a comfortable straight away advantage over Duane Chamberlain, Johnny Johnson, Joey Gower, and Keith Pratt. In the third and final heat it was a wild and wooly affair as Boone McLaughlin took the early lead but found himself in a three car battle for the lead on the third lap as the evenings fast qualifier, Steve Hillard, and Dennis Erb Jr., both came up to challenge for the lead. After pulling off a couple of slide jobs, first on Hillard, and then on McLaughlin, Erb came away with the victory followed closely by McLauglin and then Hillard. Taking the other two transfer spots were Tim Lance and Mike Mataragas. Mark Burgtorf, Steve Grotz, and Earl Smith transferred through the conci and Jarrod Holshouser, Russ Adams, and Dustin Neese were added as the provisionals to complete the field.

Korte led the pack out of turn two at the onset of the feature event but the third starting Erb was challenging for the point when the pack came out of turn 4. Erb and Korte would dance around the track door to door for the next two laps before Erb would edge ahead completing the third lap. Once up front, Erb would set sail gradually pulling away from the field and would have a 5 car length lead on Korte by the 5th lap who in turn was 3 car lengths up on Chamberlain, Barnett, and Weaver who were in contact for position. Erb would power away and be in his own zip code by the time the race reached its halfway mark as Weaver would fall out of the race leaving the balance of the top 5 being Korte, Chamberlain, Barnett, and a hotly contested battle between Hillard and Melvin. Two laps from the checkers the races only caution would fly for a spinning Mataragas out of 2. With a 3 lapped car cushion between himself and Korte, Erb would speed away to the $2500 payday followed by Korte, Chamberlain and Barnett. The hotly contested battle for 5th would come down to the stripe with Hillard taking the spot by a nose over Melvin. Ross, Dixon, Burgtorf, and Johnson would round out the top 10. Commenting on his dominating victory Erb smiled and said “It was real smooth and racey out there. I got out front and was just cruising around.”

The next stop for the NALMS Midwest Speedweek is Spoon River Speedway near Canton, IL with another 30 lap $2500 to win feature event on Thursday night August the 11th.
