Oller wins 'Nationals' sneak preview at I-55

by Richard Stoff

PEVELY, MO. (August 26, 2000) — Mark Oller pulled alongside Donnie Tudor as the two raced under the white flag and edged ahead to win Saturday's UMP Late Model feature in a sneak preview of the upcoming I-55 Pepsi Nationals.

With rainouts at nearby Highland and Mt. Vernon speedways in Illinois, I-55 ended up with a number of drivers who normally race at those tracks. As a result, the 125-car field at Pevely included 11 of the top 20 drivers in the national UMP Late Model points standings. The 18th annual I-55 Pepsi Nationals, which annually attracts many of the top drivers in the Midwest, will be held Sept. 15-16.

Oller was the fifth leader in the 25-lap late model final.

Jeff Johns led the first three laps of the feature but coasted to a stop after his car dropped its drive shaft. That turned the lead over to Ed Dixon, who was leading when the yellow came out again on lap 12 when Mark Schaefer barrel-rolled down the back straight. In the traffic jam that ensued as the field slowed, Dixon collided with another car and suffered damage to his car's front suspension and left the track behind a wrecker.

On the restart, Mark Gansmann led one lap, then Donnie Tudor blew by on the outside to become the fourth race leader. As the laps wound down, Mark Oller moved into second place and began reeling in the leader. He passed Tudor coming out of the second turn on the final lap to take the win. Tudor was second and Jim Burwell was third.

Oller, Gansmann, Johns and Billy Faust won heat races, and Faust also was the dash winner. Dave Jumper won the semi-feature.

Ray Walsh and Scott Weber held a side-by-side duel for the first 10 laps of the 20-lap UMP Modified feature. After Weber finally made a pass on lap 11, he cruised the rest of the way to win the race and extend his points lead in the chase for the track championship. Walsh finished second and Rusty Griffaw was third in a feature that was completed without a caution flag.

The 46-car modified field required five heat races, which were won by Weber, Chris Woods, Brian Collins, Leroy Haney and Rich Whaley. Woods was the dash winner, and the semi-features went to Jim Shereck and Dean Hoffman.

Dennis Wernle passed Paul Belken Jr. halfway through the 15-lap sportsman feature and finished the night as a winner. Belken was second and Doug Wood was third.

The sportsman heat winners were Belken, Mark Blanke, Mike McGowan and Jason Quirin. Belken also won the dash. Jason Worley finished first in the semi-feature.

Troy Conway and Chase Patterson won the cruiser car heat. The feature was won by Don Eaton and Dwight Bradley.
