Pevely, MO (October 2, 2004) I-55 Raceway had one of the largest gathering of race cars in it's history as 143 cars signed in to compete in the three divisions. Cold weather also settled in on the track as the temperature dropped into the lower 40's before the races were completed.

The U.M.P. (United Midwestern Promoters) Late Models Challenge of Champions Series were the showcase division as they were competing for a $15,000 top prize. The night got started with Justin Allgaier breaking the track record with a lap of 12.610 seconds. The record had been held by Donnie Moran who had set the record just two weeks earlier with a lap of 12.803 seconds. The record had stood for eight years before Moran broke it.

Dennis Erb picked up the $15,000 top prize as he led all forty laps of the main event. Erb held off the challenges of Shannon Babb as he worked his way perfectly through lapped traffic. Babb was left to battle with Eric Smith for the second spot, Smith took the second spot from Babb with just fifteen laps remaining, but Babb retook the spot as they worked through lapped traffic and finished second behind Erb. Smith took the third spot after holding off Mark Oller during the final few laps. Oller charged through the field as he came from the eleventh starting position to finish fourth. Justin Allgaier took home the fifth spot.

A huge field of 61 U.M.P. Modifieds checked in and their main event went the entire 20 laps without a caution. Scott Weber took home the win in convincing fashion as he led all twenty laps and went un-challenged for the lead during the last half of the event. The battle for second place on back raged on for the entire event as many different drivers swapped around the positions. At the end, it was Eric Mabery getting the best of everyone and taking the second spot. Ray Walsh finished a close third with the 2004 I-55 Raceway Track Champion Bobby Bittle finishing fourth. John Hobson rounded out the top five.

The top three in the U.M.P. Modified National Point Standings were on hand as well. The current point leader, Mike Harrison finished sixth in the main event, while early trouble in the qualifying heats forced Jeff Leka and Rusty Griffaw to earn their way into the main event from last chance semi races. Leka finished seventeenth and Griffaw eighteenth after starting near the back of the field.

Paul Bauman raced side-by-side lap after lap with Ricky Horton during most of the main event and held him off to earn the win. Bob Prince took the third spot while Brian Bielong and Steve Maisel rounded out the top five.
