June 24, 2009 — Jason Feger lived up to the moniker “The Highside Hustler” on Wednesday night during the 40-Lap “Hell Tour” A-main event at Tri City (Ill.) Speedway.
Blistering the top side of the banked 3/8th mile oval, Feger held off charges from the likes of Scott James, Billy Moyer, and finally Randy Korte to claim victory. “We've been working our tails off and hard work pays off,” commented Feger. “The car was real good all night.”
Feger's first “Hell Tour” win was made more memorable due to the fact his mother, who was in attendance, was celebrating her 50th birthday at the track with her son. “It's really special to win on my Mom's birthday,” he said.
Korte, who has been one of the most consistent drivers on tour recently, settled for a runner up finish after climbing from his 9th place starting spot. ” Car was good, I just had to stay patient,” a smiling Korte said. “If we ever figured the qualifying out I think we can win some races.”
The 2006 UMP DIRTcar Late Model National Champion has been moving up the UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Rankings as of late, but the absence of a win on his resume for the year still remains his focus.
“I want to win a race,” said Korte. “I know its good finishing in the top five, but I'm a racer, and it's killing me to not win a race.”
Moyer finished third, a spot up from where he started the 40-lap main event. Running the low line early the dirt late model legend found the high side was just too fast.
“You just had to slow way down to stay in the moisture down at the bottom,” he said. ” We'll learn and go to the next one”.
Tim Hancock only led the UMP Modified feature for about 50 feet, but it was the final 50 feet as he took the victory from his brother, Tommie Seets, Jr. as they came to the finish line. Mike Harrison took the lead at the drop of the green flag and was holding off the challenges of Tommie Seets, Jr. for the first ten laps. However, Harrison ran into trouble when he reached lapped traffic. As they came down the front stretch, the lapped car was given the "layover" flag. The lapped car moved high to give Harrison the low side, but Harrison was committed to the high side and the two made contact. Harrison's car then made contact with the outside wall in turn one and he then slowed down the backstretch and his night ended. That turned the lead over to Tommie Seets, Jr. and setup a great battle between Seets and Hancock for the top spot. Seets would use the high side through turns one and two and then dive to the low side in turns three and four, just in front of Hancock each time. However, on the final lap, Seets dove into the low side two hard going into turn three and couldn't keep the car on the very bottom, allowing Hancock to move underneath him. Hancock had the faster line as they exited turn four and he pulled ahead to cross the finish line just ahead of Seets. Ken Rumble, John Stanton and Dane Gundaker completed the top five.
Russell Eilers claimed the UMP Sportsman Extreme Series main event. Russell Eilers took the lead at the drop of the green flag as he pulled ahead of pole sitter Brad Paquet. Russell Eilers proceeded to lead every lap enroute to the win. His younger brother, Ryan Eilers took over the second spot near the half-way point of the main event and stayed right on the bumper of Russell Eilers, but was unable to mount a real challenge for the lead. They would cross the line one, two. Bert Jacoby would take third with Stu Springer fourth. Trey Harris got sideways in turn two on the final lap, causing a mad scramble behind him which allowed Gary Haynes to get past a couple of cars to earn the fifth spot.
