Mother Nature Captures 3 of 5 Features at Highland

(July 24, 2010) Highland IL – The forces of Mother Nature captured three of the five feature events this past Saturday night at the Highland Speedway. The Steve Schmitt UMP Modifieds, The UMP Street Stocks, and Factory Stocks all lost out due to a Midwestern Summer Thunderstorm that washed out their features. All three features will be completed when regular Saturday night racing resumes at The Speedway on August 7th.

The first of two features to beat the weather was the UMP Late Models and it was a green to checker event. Pole sitter Michael “The Trenton Tornado” Kloos jumped out to an early lead with The Speedway’s current point’s leader Chad “The Highland Bulldog” Zobrist in hot pursuit. By lap 8 the two were running into lap traffic and this gave Zobrist, driving his familiar blue and white number 78 to slip past the 6K of Kloos and take the point, leading the duo through the lap traffic.

Kloos was hanging onto the spoiler of the 78 as the two went high and low around the back half of the field. Kloos could get no closer than the rear bumper of Zobrist. When the double checkers flew Zobrist crossed the stripe first and the 6K machine of Kloos finished in second. “The Gear Jammer” from Summerfield IL, Mike Schulte was third, “Fast” Frankie Martin from DuQuoin IL came from the eight spot to finish fourth and “The Hammer Man” Mike Hammerle of St. Charles MO rounded out the top five. The win was the 6th for point’s leader Zobrist this year, opening his points lead over Mark Faust who took the evening off.

The UMP Sportsmen’s feature featured numerous yellow flags as the competition is getting aggressive toward wining the $1250 Sportsmen Challenge that has been posted by various sponsors of the track. Current point’s leader Russell Eilers started from the pole and stayed ahead of all the cautions that went on behind him. When the dust settled Russell Eilers won his 8th feature of the 2010 season, his younger brother Ryan finished second, long time Highland Sportsmen driver Rick Johnson hung in and finished third. Jim Lafferty, Jr was fourth and Allan Geiseking was back behind the wheel of MPR’s number 6 and finished 5th.

There will be no regular racing at the Highland Speedway on Saturday night July 31st

The next night of regular racing will be August 7th; a race that is always a fan favorite, Topless Night, the Late Models, Modifieds, and Sportsman will be competing without their roofs.

On the next two Tuesday nights, The Highland Speedway will host two special races. The first is on July 27th. It’s the Madison County Fair UMP Challenge of Champions presented by Budweiser and the Scott Wernle Memorial for the Extreme Sportsmen.

The following Tuesday August 3rd it’s the first annual Racing for a Cure.

Information about these and all the racing from the Highland Speedway is available by going to the tracks web site at Highland Speedway.com or by becoming a fan of the Speedway on Facebook at Facebook.com/Highland Speedway.
