Champions Crowned at Highland

(Sept 4, 2010) Highland IL – The 2010 Point season came to a close this past Saturday night at the Highland Speedway. Champions were crowned in all five divisions.

All five champions were locked in before the night’s races began but that didn’t stop the action on the track from being fast and furious.

The UMP Super Late Models were paced to the green flag by former Highland Champion Mark Faust. The number 51 sponsored by his family business Faust Automotive in Aviston IL took to the lead immediately. At lap 10 Faust held point over the “Trenton Tornado”, Michael Kloos, “Fast” Frankie Martin, Chad Zobrist and the 85 of Justin Ketrow.

The caution flag waved at lap 12 for debris and the restart remained the same, except the lapped car of Long time Highland driver Bob Geaschel, was placed between Faust and Kloos. Kloos cleared Geaschel immediately and tried every line on the track to catch the 51. By lap 20 Faust had nearly a straight away lead. He crossed the double checkers first for his fifth win in 2010. Kloos was second, Martin third, the 2010 Highland Late Models Points Champion Chad Zobrist was fourth and Shannon Kuhn rounded out the top five.

Out on the raceway next was the Steve Schmitt UMP Modifieds. Tyler Diebert driving the number 84 sat on the pole and managed to hang onto the lead through several caution periods. But by lap 8 the 24-1D of Dean Hoffmann slipped by the 84 car and took over the lead… Hoffman worked his way through lap traffic and several caution flags. At lap 18 the final caution of the event waved setting up a green white checker. With Diebert hot on his trail, again Hoffman was just too much and held on for the win. Diebert making a great run was second. Following Diebert was the 44 of Jim Werner, Jr, the, 25 of Brett Korves And the 68 Andy Oswald.

With Mike Harrison having a lock on the 2010 Steve Schmitt Modified Championship at Highland, he took the night off.

The Sportsmen, Street Stocks, and Factory Stock were dominated in 2010 by three racers; all took home the Trophies for the night in their classes along with the 2010 Championships. Russell Eilers in the Sportsman, Brad VenHaus in the Street Stocks and Jordon Suhre in the Factory are your 2010 Highland Class Champions in each of their respective classes.
