I-35 SpeedwayWINSTON, Mo. (April 2) — The USRA Iron Man Challenge kicked off the 2011 season Saturday night at the I-35 Speedway in Winston, Mo., with the USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars being joined by the USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mods for the first time.

The contest in the Show-Me State produced two winners from the Hawkeye State as Washington’s Matt Greiner led flag to flag in the Stock Car feature while Matt Lettow of Roland charged to victory in the B-Mod main event.

Greiner, who finished among the top-five in USRA Weekly Racing Series national points for four straight seasons in the Stock Car division from 2006 to 2009, made just his second Iron Man Challenge start pay off Saturday night as he drew the pole position for the “A” Main and held off the challenges of Justin Temeyer the entire distance to earn the $700 winner’s share of the prize money.

Damon Murty finished third after starting in the eighth spot, while last year’s Iron Man Challenge runner-up Mike Van Genderen beat defending Iron Man Challenge titleist Nathan Wood to the stripe for fourth.

Chris Ullrich was sixth, Steve Jackson finished seventh, Tom McKenzie clawed his way from 15th to eighth, Jeff Joldersma wound up ninth and Jeff Dixon of Janesport finished tenth as the only Missouri driver in the top-10.

Lettow etched his name in the books as the first Iron Man Challenge winner in the B-Mod division with an impressive run from seventh on the starting grid to take the checkered flag first and pocket the $500 top prize.

A flat tire on his racecar hauler almost kept Troy Hovey from making it to the track on time, but a second-place finish in Saturday’s lidlifter help make the long drive from Decorah, Iowa, a bit more bearable.

Adel, Iowa’s Dylan Book was third, Mike Higley of Tecumseh, Kan., raced from 13th to fourth and Tracy Johnson of Preston, S.D., rounded out the top five finishers. Sixth through tenth went to Brian Schrage, Cayden Carter, Brandon Leeman, Blake Peeler and Bobby Penny.

The Iron Man Challenge for USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars and USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mods will return to action at the end of May with three big events over four days.

On Wednesday, May 25, the series will be at the Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa, and Thursday, May 26, will find them at the Highway 3 Raceway in Allison, Iowa.

On Saturday, May 28, the Deer Creek Speedway play host to the Iron Man Challenge for the first time. USRA-sanctioned B-Mods became a part of the weekly program at ‘The Creek’ in 2010, but this will be the first and only occasion that the USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars will compete at the popular speedplant in Spring Valley, Minn.

Nineteen dates at eleven dirt ovals comprise the 2011 schedule for the second season of the Iron Man Challenge. For the Stock Cars, each event will pay a minimum of $500 to win and four races are penciled in with a top prize of at least $1,000 to win. All events will pay a minimum $125 to start the main event, and the points fund will carry a $2,000 top prize with the tenth-place finisher earning $200.

For the B-Mods, each event will pay a minimum $500 to win and all shows will pay at least $100 to start the feature. The points champion will earn $700 with tenth-place taking home $100.

Points for both classes will be awarded based on a driver’s best 10 points races.

Licensed USRA drivers in both classes will also earn national points in the USRA Weekly Racing Series. To earn points and be eligible for points funds, drivers must possess a valid USRA Competitor License, utilize the American Racer KK704 racing tire on all four wheels and compete in at least ten events.
