Hughes keeps rolling with USMTS win at Tri-State Speedway

USMTS - United States Modified Touring SeriesPOCOLA, Okla. (April 28) – The USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour powered by Swan Energy embarked on the four-week $pring $wing campaign Thursday night at the Tri-State Speedway in Pocola, Okla., and Jason Hughes served notice that he plans to take the bulk of the prize money back home with him if he has anything to say about it.

The defending USMTS National Champion started on the outside of the front row for Thursday’s 30-lap WIX Filters “A” Main at the 3/8-mile high-banked dirt oval and led every lap en route to a $2,000 payday and his sixth victory this season.

Hughes built an advantage of nearly ten car-lengths before the race’s first and only caution waved on lap 11. The yellow flag gave second-running Johnny Scott a glimmer of hope, but Hughes wasn’t fazed and sailed away over the final 19 laps to take his third win in as many seasons at the Tri-State Speedway.

Hughes’ crew chief, Steve Karver, was awarded the first CPD Racing Tools “Wrench of the Race” Award. CPD Racing Tools located in Fort Dodge, Iowa, recently joined the family of USMTS sponsors and will be recognizing one team’s crew chief at 20 select events during the 2011 season.

Scott was able to close in on the leader in lapped traffic during the late stages of the race, but had to settle for the runner-up position at the checkered flag.

Kelly Shryock brought home a third-place finish while Ryan Gustin raced from 11th on the starting grid to fourth at the finish line. Driving a brand new car, Tommy Myer won his Real Racing Wheels “B” Main, started 14th in the main event and fought his way to fifth.

Johnny Bone Jr. was sixth, polesitter Dustin Boney held on for a seventh-place finish and Zack VanderBeek pocketed the Mesilla Valley Transportation Hard Charger Award by grabbing eighth after starting 22nd. Chris Spieker and Bobby Malchus rounded out the top-10 finishers.

The USMTS $pring $wing will take place over the next four weekends with 14 shows over the course of 25 days and over $200,000 in prize money awaiting the nation’s elite open-wheel dirt Modified drivers. Each event will pay $2,000 to win and a minimum of $250 to start the main event.

On Friday, April 29, the Outlaw Motor Speedway near Muskogee, Okla., welcomes back the USMTS Modifieds for the 3rd Annual Creek Nation Casino Spring Fling. Hughes is a two-time winner at “The Outlaw” too with a win March last year as well as the inaugural event in 2003.

Gates open at 5:30 and racing begins at 8 p.m. Factory Stocks, Pure Stocks, Grand Nationals and 360 Modifieds will also be in action.

The Outlaw Motor Speedway is located southwest of Muskogee on I-40 to US 69, then 10 miles north to the Wainwright Exit, then 0.1 mile east. For more information call 918-687-9200 or visit www.outlawmotorspeedway.com online.
