Jason Bodenhamer Pulls Double Whammy at CMS on Opening Night as Jimmy Morris and Jacob Ebert also find Waterloo Storage Products Victory Lane!

(Warrensburg, MO) – Near perfect spring weather settled in over Central Missouri Speedway Saturday evening for Cliff Harris’ Warrensburg Ford, Warrensburg Chrysler night at the races. Fans in the stands took in the exciting opening night action at the ‘Fastest High Banked Clay Oval in the Midwest’ in four fast divisions, including the ‘mighty’ modifieds, ULMA late models, street stocks, and b-modifieds as a total of 59 drivers took part in the competition. Drivers competed in nine preliminary heat races and four main events during the night, which wrapped up just after 10 pm.
Prior to the races getting underway, the “Best in Show” awards for all classes were handed out to Jacob Ebert in the b-modifieds, Chad Eickleberry in the street stocks, Brett Wood in the ULMA Late Models, and Dean Wille in the modifieds. Each driver was presented with a plaque signifying their cars were chosen as best looking cars at the recent CMS/American Legion Post 131 car show.
During the intermission break, drivers took part in a “pass-the-helmet” fundraiser for track photographer John Lee, who continues to recover at home after an injury to his foot a couple of weeks back. Unofficially, the total raised exceeded $1,850 for the Lee family. Part of the collection was donated by the 50/50 winner, who donated all $436 of her winnings and also money raised from the “get well High Fly’N photos” stickers made and donated by Gator Graphics that were sold to drivers and fans throughout the night. Kicking things off were the Brooks Automotive B-Mods with a pair of heat races for the 16 cars on hand. A resurging Trent Deadmon claimed heat one with title contender Jacob Ebert grabbing heat two. For the main event, Deadmon led the feature event early on until Ebert made his move five laps into the race with Ethan Isaacs making it a fierce three-car battle with Deadmon and Ebert up front. With a few late-race cautions thrown into the mix, Ebert held off the charges of Deadmon and Isaacs throughout the race to claim his fourth-ever CMS win over Isaacs in second and Deadmon third. One of the fastest cars on the track was Johnny McGinnis who posted a strong fourth-place finish just ahead of outside polesitter Bronson Combs in fifth and Cody Brill in sixth.
The Eickleberry Concrete, Expressways Food Shop, Brooks Automotive Street Stocks took to the track for two pre-main event heat qualifiers. Jimmy Morris made a strong return to CMS by claiming heat one with Scotty Dukes, driving for Bryant and Kim Moyer in the 9d car, taking heat two. With the two heat winners starting on the front row for the 15-lap main, Morris quickly showed he had the upper hand on the rest of the field and pulled away from Dukes early. Herb Dannar had a strong run early as did Bryce McMillin. Brian Ziegler and Chad Eickleberry put on a great drive to the top six in the field in the early laps. However, both Eickleberry and Ziegler left the race early. The best battle on the track was for second between Ziegler and McMillin as Morris continued to distance himself from the field. Unfortunately, late in the race, the McMillin-Ziegler close battle ended up with both drivers suffering flat tires, which dropped them from contention as Morris sailed on to his second-ever CMS main event win. Michael Mullins posted a strong runner-up finish with T.J. Faulkenberry coming home with his best-ever CMS finish in third, with Nate Barnes Fourth, Larry Ferris fifth and new driver Bud Emond sixth.
Up next were the Rod End Supply, Bodee’s Race Bodies, B&D Transmission, All-American Auto ULMA Late Models for two heats. Lane Ehlert, all the way over from the St. Louis suburbs of Foristell claimed the opening heat race in fine fashion with defending track champion Jason Bodenhamer taking heat two. These two drivers earned the most passing points and began the 20-lap main event on the front row. At the drop of the green flag it was Bodenhamer who secured the lead over Ehlert. Another St. Louis-area driver, Shawn Rayfield, in a CRATE late model, quickly made his way to second and put pressure on Bodenhamer nearly the entire race distance, even showing Bodee a nose a time or two, especially in corners one and two. A few mishaps from mid-pack on back slowed the race midway through, but the drivers settled in and had a strong run to the checkered flag with Bodenhamer ultimately claiming the win. Rayfield ran a strong second with Brett Wood third, Steve Clancy fourth, Kevin Coyne fifth and a returning Allen Perryman in sixth.
Finishing up the night were the Beebe Heating & Cooling, Seeburg Mufflers, Cornerstone Agency, Dale’s Towing Modifieds with three hotly contested qualifying heats. One of the all-time winningest drivers at CMS took heat one as Chad Lyle brought home the win. Terry Schultz claimed heat two and Jason Bodenhamer, pulling double-duty driving, took heat three. Lyle and Bodenhamer secured the front row with the most passing points and brought the field to the green for the 25-lap main event. The lead pack of drivers set a blistering pace early on with several strong runners like Mark Dotson, Aaron Marrant, and Tyler Schmidt trying to make their way to the front of the pack from way back. A tense moment on lap 15 occurred when Schmidt ended up against the front stretch wall as the yellow flag flew. On the restart, Bodenhamer began to work the high line around the track to his advantage pulling up to Lyle to challenge for the lead. Behind these drivers Luke Driskell ran very strong to make it a three-way battle. Meanwhile, Dotson found himself inside the top five as the leaders continued putting cars a lap down on the fast and racy track. For a while, it looked as if Bodenhamer and Driskell would watch Lyle sail onto victory but a late-race caution changed the whole dynamics of the race as Bodenhamer grabbed the lead away from Lyle using a high-side pass off of the reconfigured turn four to blast into the lead. Bodenhamer went on to secure his second main event of the night and nineteenth overall CMS win. Lyle finished a very respectable second with hard-charging Mark Dotson making his way to third after starting nineteenth. Luke Driskell recorded his best CMS finish in fourth with Curt Rackers fifth and Dean Wille sixth.
Each week at CMS, pit gates opening at 4:30 p.m., front and back-side grandstand admission open at 5, and hot-laps begin at 7 with racing at 7:30. CMS weekly races include modifieds, ULMA late models, street stocks, and b-modifieds.
