USMTS - United States Modified Touring SeriesAMARILLO, Texas (May 21) – Kelly Shryock returned to the winner’s circle Saturday night as he captured his second straight USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour powered by Swan Energy main event in front of more than 4,000 spectators at the Route 66 Motor Speedway in Amarillo, Texas.

Lubbock’s Monte Bolton paced the first two laps around the 3/8-mile high-banked clay oval before giving way to Ryan Gustin who was looking to score his ninth victory of the season.

But Shryock, who started on the inside of the second row next to Gustin, quickly moved into second place and stayed within striking distance throughout the first half of the 40-lap WIX Filters “A” Main.

Racing through lapped traffic, Gustin and Shryock raced side by side for several laps before Shryock secured the top spot for the first time with 29 laps in the books.

From there, the nine-time USMTS National Champion was able to cruise unchallenged to the checkered flag to pick up his second $2,000 triumph of the weekend and 167th of his USMTS career.

Gustin crossed the finish line nearly two seconds behind Shryock to take home the runner-up paycheck, but his eighth top-five finish in eights starts easily earned him the Day Motor Sports Southwest Region points title and the $2,000 top prize that accompanies it.

Rodney Sanders of nearby Happy, Texas, won last year’s event at the Route 66 Motor Speedway and wound up third in Saturday night’s feature race.

Clyde Dunn Jr. put two weeks of disappointing results behind him with a fourth-place finish while defending USMTS National Champion Jason Hughes completed the top-five finishers.

Sixth through tenth, respectively, went to Randy Timms, Stormy Scott, Shane Hebert, Bolton and Bobby Malchus.

Five days of cash and chaos is up next for the USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour powered by Swan Energy as the series heads north for their traditional Memorial Day Weekend swing through Iowa and Minnesota, Wednesday through Sunday, May 25-29.

Action kicks off on Wednesday at the Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa, followed on Thursday by another Arnold Motor Supply Central States Region clash at the Highway 3 Raceway in Allison, Iowa.

Friday will find the rugged USMTS road warriors at the Chateau Raceway in Lansing, Minn., for the first contest in the mega-tough Yeager Machine Upper Midwest Region.

On Saturday, it’s the first trip of the 2011 season to the Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn., and the weekend wraps up on Sunday in Kasson, Minn., at the Dodge County Speedway.

Each event will pay $2,000 to win and a minimum $250 to start. Race fans can pick up $2-off general admission coupons for each show on race day at area Casey’s General Stores. Check out www.caseys.com to find the location nearest you.
