USMTS - United States Modified Touring SeriesALLISON, Iowa (May 26) – In front of a huge crowd Thursday night at the Highway 3 Raceway the drivers in the Iron Man Challenge rewarded the fans with great racing action throughout the evening and big car counts in both classes.

A field of 44 USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mods were on hand with 36 USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars also packing the pit area of the Butler County Fairgrounds in Allison, Iowa.

Spectators have become accustomed to witnessing side-by-side, door-to-door action in the Stock Car class, and Thursday night’s 20-lap main event did nothing to change that.

Steve Jackson of Polk City started on the inside of the second row, but made a daring pass in the first turn to grab the top spot and lead the first lap of the feature race.

Polesitter Tory Reicks of Waucoma battled back the next time around and took the lead away from Jackson while the next five competitors were swapping positions in every turn.

Decorah’s Kevin Donlan snagged the position away from Reicks on lap 5 and kept his machine out front for the next seven laps while a fierce battle between the rest of the drivers in the top-10 continued with every lap.

With seven laps to go, 11th-starting Dan Christopher of Decorah executed a cross-over move in turn 1-2 and powered ahead of Donlan for the lead. His reign was short-lived, however, as contact with another car two laps later sent Christopher’s machine spinning through the mud at the bottom of turn 4.

With 15 laps in the books, defending Iron Man Challenge Stock Car Champion Nathan Wood found himself at the front of the field, and that’s right where the elementary school principal from Sigourney stayed until the checkered flag flew five laps later.

The win was worth $700 to the 2006 USRA Hobby Stock National Champion while Reicks, who captured the 2009 national title in the USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars, held on for the $500 runner-up paycheck.

Donlan held on for third, Mike Van Genderen of Newton rebounded from an early-race spin to finish fourth and Fairbank’s Dan Trimble rounded out the top-5 at the finish line. Sixth through tenth, respectively, went to Chris Ulrich, Wayne Crimmins, Damon Murty, Chris Adams and Christopher.

Defending USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mod National Champion Brandon Hare of Elma picked up the trophy and $500 winner’s share of the prize money in the B-Mod main event, but not until more than hour after the checkered flag waved.

From the pole position, Cresco’s Brian Schrage led the first nine laps of the “A” Main while Hare and Jimmy Broszeit of Postville gave chase.

Broszeit got around Hare on lap 5, made the pass for the lead four laps later and extended his lead over the final six laps to cross beneath the checkered flag in first place with Hare and Schrage in second and third.

During post-race technical inspection, however, Broszeit’s engine was found to be illegal and he was disqualified which handed the win to Hare.

Schrage was also found to be using an unapproved part and was stripped his third-place finish, which moved Blairsburg’s Bob Sutherland from fourth to second while Tyler Droste of Waterloo received third-place money, Mike Shelton of Bloomfield took fourth and points leader Matt Lettow of Roland got fifth.

Troy Hovey, Parker Hale, Lucas Lundry, Carter VanDenBerg and Clint Luellen finish sixth through tenth, respectively.

On Saturday, the Iron Man Challenge featuring the USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars will invade the Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn., which features USRA RHS Modifieds and USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mods as part of its weekly Saturday night program.

Grandstands gates open at 3 p.m. with $1 beer, pop and hot dogs available from 3-4 p.m. Races start at 5 p.m. Midwest Mods and Street Stocks will also join the line-up in support of the USMTS Modifieds. Late Models and USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mods will not be racing this night.

Race fans can pick up $2-off grandstand admission coupons on race day at Casey’s General Store locations in Austin, Owatonna, Rochester and Stewartville. To find the location nearest you, check out www.caseys.com online.

The Deer Creek Speedway is located 11.3 miles south of I-90 (exit 209) on US 63 (0.7 mile north of SR 16). For more info, call toll-free 877-DCS-RACE or 507-346-2342 on raceday or visit www.deercreekspeedway.com online.
