FRESH FACES FIND VICTORY LANE AS KANKAKEE TOPS MOTHER NATURE

(KANKAKEE, IL – MAY 27th) – Friday night, Kankakee County Speedway hosted Kankakee County Food Pantry Night, and despite an uncertainty of weather looming throughout the region, one thing remained certain. Race fans would be treated to another night of spectacular racing and witness a bevy of first time winners at the speedway. With 111 cars in the pits in five divisions, the show kicked off fifteen minutes earlier than normal following a brief driver’s meeting in an all out effort to topple Mother Nature for the fourth straight week.

First on the agenda was the 15-lap Smith Realty Independent Modified (I-Mods) feature. Mitch Bailey of Medaryville, IN, made his first appearance at the speedway in a brand new ride, led flag to flag to capture the checkered flag. In fact, he also won his heat race upping his record to a perfect 4 for 4 on the young season. Dan Kroll of Chebanse also made his return to racing in the I-Mods in a car he and owner Rick Kingsnorth picked up just last week. Kroll would show no signs on rust or nervousness, as he pursued Bailey the entire distance, keeping himself in contention for the win. Defending track champion Adam Williams of Wheatfield, IN, would hold off Lowell’s Mike Kingma and Rich Gynn to round out the top five in a caution free feature.

Bailey and newcomer Chris Beleaz captured preliminary heat races.

Lee J. Hall of Rensselear, IN, would also lead wire to wire in the 15-lap Miller Hydraulic UMP Stock Car feature, after winning the scramble to turn one from his outside front row starting spot over pole sitter and current points leader Joe Brown of Wilmington. Despite Brown’s best efforts to claim the top spot, the veteran Hall, a fixture in victory lane over the years at the now closed Kamp Motor Speedway in Boswell, IN, maintained his composure and never wavered his tactics running near the top side of the racing surface. Brown would settle for a third runner-up finish on the season in four outings, while David Billingsley of Chebanse picked up three spots to claim third. Kevin Lenzen and Lon Franks rounded out the top five.

Brown, Hall, and Lenzen all were victorious in heat race action. There was no consolation race in an effort to speed up the program, as promoter

Tom Smith decided to start all 27 entries in the 15-lap main event. Only Travis Wolford, who showed heavy signs of smoke in his heat race, failed to make the call.

Steven “McLovin” Brooks of New Lenox, IL, has made the complete transition from the asphalt to the dirt as he garnered his first career Chicago Heights U-Pull-It UMP Modified feature win after a handful of close calls. Brooks who started on the pole, fell to second as outside pole sitting Chad Osterhoff of Kankakee led the first two circuits before succumbing to Brooks on lap three. Brooks would lead for the next six laps while Wheatfield’s Nick Allen was running down Brooks up on the rim. After a caution came out on lap 10, Allen would shoot into with nine to go and begin to pull away. However, Brooks was able to keep pace with Allen lap after lap. With just three laps to go, Jamie Lomax brought out the races final caution when he got out of shape in turn two and into the slimy infield while running a strong third. When the race resumed with four to go, Brooks was able to pull even with Allen going through turns one and two. As the duo came to the white flag, Allen dove to the bottom and executed a slide job to momentarily take the lead only to have Brooks counter the move coming off of turn two to keep a slight edge. As they headed into turns three and four, Brooks moved high to slow the momentum of Allen who bobbled coming off turn four after slight contact was made. Brooks would cross the line first with Dave Porth moving around Allen to claim second. Allen was third followed by Travis Kohler and AJ Dixon who crossed the stripe fourth and fifth, respectively. A season best for both drivers.

Brooks, Osterhoff, and Porth all scored heat race wins, while last week’s winner, Vince Cooper picked up the consi win.

Newcomer Scott Bull of Fairbury made a rare appearance to the speedway Friday, and though he has had a history of good runs here in recent years, was able to find victory lane after early race leader and outside pole sitter Steve Dimmick pulled off with mechanical woes relinquishing the lead to Bull, who started fourth. Bull was able to speed away and best a field of 18 Court Street Ford UMP Late Models for an uncontested win, while Mike Provenzano and Scott Schmitt battled it out for second. Pole sitter Jay Morris of Pittwood claimed a season best fourth place, while Rensselear native Kerry Mathew scored another top five finish.

Schmitt and Morris picked up the heat race checkers.

The night’s finale, the Indulgent Creations UMP Sport Compact feature, was cut short with six laps in the books as a light rain fell for about 20 minutes. The race will be concluded where it left off with nine laps remaining when the four cylinder cars return to the speedway on Friday, June 10th.

Next Friday, June 3rd, Kankakee County Speedway hosts the Illini Racing Series Midgets along with a full program of racing including UMP sanctioned Late Models, Modifieds, Stock Cars, and I-Mods.

Adult admission is $12, Kids 11-16 $6, 10 and Under FREE. Pit admission is $25.

Pit Gates open at 4pm, Main Gates at 5pm, Hot laps at 6pm, Qualifying at 630pm, and Racing at 730pm SHARP!

Kankakee County Speedway is conveniently located one mile south of Interstate 57 at Exit 308, at the Kankakee County Fairgrounds.
