The second and final night of the annual Memorial Day weekend of special-events racing came to a close Sunday night with hot temperatures and a completely different track than night one. Last night’s cool and damp air created a tricky and tacky fast track for the drivers and once again, just as she’s done all spring throughout the Midwest, Mother Nature was in the house again! Wind and sun were at the forefront of the afternoon and evening at Central Missouri Speedway (CMS) as modified drivers tried to claim the $3,000 pay day in a 40-lap main event. The Midwest Lightning Sprints (MLS) and 305 Sprints were also on hand for the evening’s program. Once the last checkered flag of the night fell on the speedway, it was Dustin Boney claiming the big modified money, Phillip Heavelow went to victory lane for the MLS, and Christi Hoenshell wound up as the 305 Sprint Car feature winner.

The 305 sprinters kicked off the evening with their eight-lap heat races. A total 12 cars were on hand for competition. Qualifying heat wins were claimed by Mitchell Moore and Zach Clark. Moore and Clark started the 20-lap main event from the front row and from the start Clark was well in control as he left Moore, Mike Schouten, and Christi Hoenshell to battle for the runner-up position. Although Clark was in control, the rest of the drivers searched for a way to get a run on the leader but could not make a pass for the lead. McGarry and Hoenshell had a classic battle for second as Moore slipped back to fourth throughout the mid stages of the race. With minimal slowdowns for caution periods the 305 drivers ran their cars to the limit as the laps wore down. Clark crossed the finish line in first place, received all the accolades in victory lane, only to be disqualified in post-race technical inspection due to a rules settled for a runner-up finish with Moore coming home in third place. Steven Cross, Rick Suhr, and Michael White rounded out the top six.

Next up were the MLS sprinters, making their first-ever appearance at CMS. A total of 14 cars participated in the program, Phillip Heavelow and Jim DeVore securing the heat race wins. Devore and Matt Gilbert started the 20-lap main event on the pole positions with Heavelow and Bobby Layne just behind. From the drop of the green flag the MLS drivers looked solid as they made it through the entire race distance without a single caution period. Lap-after-lap clicked off as DeVore stayed solidly out front with Heavelow never letting the leader get too far out of his sights. Mark Billings was a consistent top-three car for the race distance as he tried to keep the lead duo within a reasonable distance. Just as it appeared DeVore would drive on to victory lane, Phillip Heavelow made a late-race pass to get by DeVore and went on to record the win despite some contact between the leaders on the final lap. Devore originally finished second but was disqualified in the final rundown. Bobby Layne came away with the second spot with Billings third, Gilbert fourth, Dusty Murray fifth, and Luke Waters sixth.

After twelve drivers secured their starting positions through the night one inside row qualifying events for the ‘mighty’ modifieds, another 12 drivers tried to fight their way into the starting line-up of the 40-lap main event through a series of heat races and the night two 20-lap scramble. Heat victories were claimed Luke Driskell, Rick Beebe, and Matt Johnson. The 20 remaining cars of the 32 on hand then participated in a scramble event with Johnson securing the win just ahead of Rick Beebe and Shad Badder to earn outside row starting positions..

Now, with the line-up set for the $3,000-to-win race, Dustin Boney and Johnson led the 24-car field to the initial green flag. After a quick yellow for the stalled car of David Wood, the drivers ran 13 laps before the second caution fell for a spinning Justin Johnson. By this time Johnson, who led the first lap, had slipped to a battle for second position with Terry Schultz and Shad Badder. On lap fifteen, the caution flew again as several cars experienced problems in turns one and two. Unfortunately, for Chad Lyle, who could not clear the cars involved in the spin was forced to leave the race as a result of the contact with another car. By lap sixteen, Boney was still in control with Badder, Schultz, and now Nate Caruth inside the top four. Danny Barker’s car spun by lap 17 by which time only 3 cars had dropped from the race. Behind Boney, the battle for the rest of the top five was a fierce one with Schultz, Badder, and Caruth really getting after it to try and chase down the leader. On lap 24 Dean Wille’s car was spun as the caution flag flew again while at the same time Steve Twenter and Jeremy Johnson tangled in corner three. It was to be the final slowdowns in the race as Boney set sail and went on to record another special-events win at CMS. Schultz made a high-side pass on Badder at the finish line as these drivers finished second and third. Although Chase Junghans and Austin Siebert originally finished fourth and fifth, their cars were disqualified in post-race technical inspection. This put Jason Bodenhamer in fourth, Johnson fifth, and Jason Thompson sixth. The rest of the top ten were Beebe, Driskell, Caruth, and Tyler Schmidt tenth.

Next weekend the speedway returns to normal weekly Saturday night action for Comfort Inn Warrensburg Station night at the races featuring modifieds, ULMA late models, street stocks and b-modifieds. Pit gates will open at 4:30, admission gates at 5, hot laps begin at 7 and racing gets underway at 7:30. Admission prices are $12 for adults, $10 for senior citizens 65+ and active duty military w/I.D., kids ages 6 to 12 are just $5, with children five and under free, pit passes are $25.
