Peoria SpeedwayBollinger, Siegel, Harrison, Butterfield, Archdale get wins on Fathers Day Eve

(Peoria, IL) Steve Lance, Jr. battled his brother Tim and Charley Hess, winning an entertaining 30 lap UMP Late Model feature on Fathers’ Day weekend at Peoria Speedway Saturday night.

Tim Lance started outisde row 1 and jumped to the lead at the beginnng the race over pole sitter Jay Sparks using the very top of the track. By lap 7, Steve Lance,Jr had driven past Sparks and Mike Mullvain for 2nd, and began what would become a race-long chase of his brother, who was driving the top in turns 1 &2, and the bottom of 3 & 4 as his preferred line.

Tim began to encounter lapped traffic on lap 10, but was trapped on lap 13 behind a 3-way battle between Dick Taylor, Roger Rebhotlz, and Keith Piano which virtually blocked the track. The blockage allowed Steve to close the gap by lap 16 and the 2 ran nose-tail until clearing lapped traffic on lap 18.

Charley Hess, who had charged from his 8th starting spot , joined the battle using the low side exclusively, and took 2nd from Steve as he tried the middle on lap 20. The first caution of the race flew on lap 24, and on the re-start Steve jumped to the high side and sailed past Hess to take over 2nd. Running the top exclusively, Steve pulled even on lap 27, and then took the lead down the back stretch on lap 28. A Jason Jaggers spin on the front stretch negated the pass, however, bringing out the 2nd caution of the race.

On the re-start, Tim drove to the top to block his brother, but Steve turned left as they raced side-by-side down the backstrectch with Hess in tow. Steve drove to the bottom of the track in turn 3 and cleared Tim coming out of turn 4 as the white flag flew for the lead. Hess passed Tim for 2nd in turn 2, but could never close the gap on Steve. Hess finished 2nd, with Lance, Todd Bennett, and Richie Bell completing the top 5.

“That was a lot of fun racing with my brother”, Steve said after the race. “I think I out-guessed them on tires, as we went harder so we were good over that long run. I knew he would try to block me on that re-start so I just turned under him and made it stick in 4. The fans had to enjoy that one!”

In the UMP Modifieds, Ray Bollinger led flag-to-flag, surviving 4 cautions for the win over Donovan Lodge, Butch Weisser, Mike Chasteen, Jr., and Mark Johnson. “We had the car set up to run the bottom so it was key for us to get a good start. I saw Erik’s nose a few times so I knew I had to not make any mistakes”, said Bollinger.

Jason Weyeneth jumped to the start of the Limited Late Model feature event until lap 6, when Jack Siegel made a pass in the middle of the track for the lead on lap 6. Siegel had to hold off a charging Ryan Blair for the win. “I want to thank my brother for helping me out with the car, It’s a family affair”, Siegel said in victory lane.

Paula Harrison picked up her first win of the year in one of the best races of the night in the Street Stock feature. Harrison started on the pole, but quickly found herself in a 3-way battle with veterans Chuck Barnes, Jr. and John Farris. After a lap 3 caution, Farris tried to drive under Harrison by the flag stand, but Harrison slammed the door shut as the two made contact. Farris began running the middle of the track and pulled even with Harrison on lap 6. Harrison and Farris ran dead-even over the next 4 laps until another caution 10 set up a 2 lap shootout. Harrison got a good start and held on for the win. Barnes, Farris, Bob Simpson and Virgil Nussel rounded out the top 5.

An excited Harrison could hardly describe the race as she sat in victory lane. “I can’t believe I beat those guys!! I saw Chucks’ nose there and me and John ran side-by-side for a long time there. Those guys are awful hard to beat so this is great!”. When asked about slamming the door shut on Farris on the re-start, Harrison replied “That’s the way we play, John and I.”

Austin Archdale dominated the Illinois Lightning Sprint feature event, and shared a special moment in victory lane on Fathers’ Day weekend with his grandfather, Peoria announcer Roger Sollenberger. “In all my years of coming down here, I never, ever thought I would be standing in victory lane with my grandson”, Sollenberger told the crowd as Archdale held the trophy. “This is a special night for us.”

The Hornet feature was another battle between Kenny Butterfield and Jeremy Kinglsey, who ran in a dead heat over the first 6 laps of the 10 lap feature until Butterfield assumed control on lap 7. Kingsley ended up 2nd, followed by Brent Terry, Tyler Benson and Matt Musgrave.

Action resumes next Saturday night at Peoria Speedway with a full UMP racing program.
