(Warrensburg) The 8th Annual Tom Wilson Memorial BBQ Bowl final night of racing at Central Missouri Speedway (CMS) was one the fans will remember for a long time with rain showers creating a doubtful night for dirt racing, but Earl Walls and the CMS crew were able to prepare the fast clay oval track for the annual special feature events. All of the fans enjoyed a night with 72 drivers competing and a grand finale with Fireworks at the end the evening.
The Waterloo Storage Products Victory Lane celebration in the street stock feature went to Don Dannar from Odessa, who went home with his first CMS win of 2011. The Midwest Lightning Sprints (MLS) put on a good show when Phil Heavelow from Buckner won the MLS feature. The modified division ran a scramble event to finish qualifying when Jim Moody from Odessa claimed the outside front-row starting spot for the Tom Wilson Memorial. The special $5,000 modified feature event capped off an evening of exciting racing action on the tacky track when USMTS driver, Kelly Shryock from Fertile, Iowa triumphed in the Tom Wilson Memorial special feature, which honored the long-time CMS announcer.
The street stock drivers were running their second night of weekend racing action at CMS. The Brooks Automotive LLC and Eickleberry Concrete heat races early in the program had Terry Schmidt, Herb Dannar and Jimmy Morris taking the heat race wins. In Expressways Food Shop main event, Michael Mullins led early until he pulled off into the pits with a problem. As a result, Don Dannar inherited the top spot and stayed out front despite multiple caution flags. Terry Schmidt worked into the second spot battling with Chad Eickleberry and Larry McCraken. Eickleberry then spun around in turn two with Dannar still leading. Finally, as they crossed the finish line, it was Dannar, who claimed his first feature event of the season with Larry Ferris second, Jeremy Curless, McCraken and Logan Clark in the top five.
The Midwest Lightning Sprints made their second appearance this season, this time with Australian driver D.J. Raw joining the field of 12 drivers. Heat winners were Richard Layne and Phil Heavelow. In the feature event, Heavlow snatched the win after a late race move past Layne for the win. Raw was presented a special recognition trophy on the track after the feature for making the long haul to CMS.
The final night of qualifying for the Tom Wilson Memorial had 44 talented modified drivers checked in for the 12 remaining outside-row starting positions. The Cornerstone Agency, Beebe Heating & Cooling, Seeburg Muffler and Dale’s Towing heat race victories went to Jim Moody, Matt Dotson, Shad Badder and Mickey Burrell. In the final chance b-main event, Justin Johnson gained the win to qualify for the scramble along with Tyler Schmidt, Dustin Boney and Ron Keith.
The final 20-lap scramble race was the last chance for drivers to qualify with Tim Karrick and Nate Carruth starting on the front row after an intermission draw for the top-12 passing point’s drivers. Dean Wille spun out early in the scramble then Aaron Marrant and Josh Everhart had to leave with mechanical issues. Moody moved around Karrick early in the scramble and stayed out front for the remainder of the race. As the double checkers flew, Moody crossed the finish line claiming the outside front-row starting position. Karrick looked strong in second, Nate Carruth, Johnny Bone Jr., Badder, Burrell, Mark Shafman, Dustin Boney from the B-main, Matt Dotson, Chad Lyle, Nic Bidinger and Dean Wille, coming back from the early spin, settled the outside row for the main event.
The Tom Wilson Memorial grid of 24 drivers was set for the 40-lap special event. Shryock and Moody led the modified drivers to the green flag with Shryock grabbing the early lead on the inside line. An early race caution on lap two in turn four caused a flat tire for 2010 Tom Wilson Memorial winner, Dustin Boney ending his night. Nic Bindger also departed the track early on ending his night as well. On lap 18, Karrick and Moody made some contact in turn two with Moody then departing the racing surface with a mechanical problem. Lapped traffic came into play later on as Shryock masterfully worked his way through the traffic as Johnny Allen closed the gap.
When the final double checkers flew it was Shryock who claimed the $5,000 prize for the Tom Wilson Memorial, a race he also won in 2007. John Allen stayed close by in second, Rick Beebe with a strong run moved into third, Johnny Bone Jr. was fourth, Jason Thompson fifth, with Terry Beckham, Karrick, Chad Lyle, Matt Johnson, and Carruth finishing in the top ten.
