Shryock makes most of mulligan, wins Friday qualifier to earn front row start in King of America Modified Nationals finale

King of America Modified NationalsHUMBOLDT, Kan. (Oct. 21) – If Saturday’s King of America Modified Nationals finale is anything like the qualifying features the last three nights, Humboldt Speedway fans are in for a legendary battle that will be talked about for years to come.

On Friday, Schwab’s Tinker Shop Qualifying Night produced the third straight qualifying feature of the week that came down to the wire with a pass for the lead in the closing laps.

Ryan Gustin passed Terry Phillips with three laps to go on win Wednesday’s race, and Johnny Scott got by Jon Tesch for the lead just four laps from the finish to win on Thursday. Kelly Shryock did one better, snagging the lead from Brian Bolin with the white flag blowing in the breeze and then checking out during a green-white-checkered finish to take the win in Friday’s feature race.

Like Tesch on Thursday, Mark Dotson posted the fastest lap in his qualifying group during time trials, came from the sixth position to win his heat race and then took control of the 35-lap main event at the drop of the green flag.

But one lap after the race’s first caution on lap 7, Bolin scooted by on the inside to take away the top spot from Dotson. From there, Bolin set sail and built a six-car-length advantage over Dotson during the next five laps.

Shryock, who started seventh, methodically worked his way forward and moved around Dotson to take away second place on lap 12. By lap 20, Bolin still maintained a comfortable cushion over Shryock while Steven Whiteaker Jr. was third and beginning to pressure the nine-time USMTS National Champion.

With 22 laps complete, Shryock abandoned the low side of the track to test the darkened middle groove where Whiteaker was gaining ground. Liking his new line, Shryock quickly closed the gap between himself and Bolin.

Pulling alongside of Bolin as they drifted into turn 3, Shryock powered off the fourth turn and led the race for the first time as the white flag waved. Before the lap could be completed, however, the yellow flag appeared to set up a green-white-checkered finish.

The caution only delayed the inevitable as Shryock motored away to take the win  — the 175th of his United States Modified Touring Series win.

But the caution was an unwelcome sight for Bolin, who dropped the runner-up spot to Whiteaker on the restart. At the finish line, Dotson nipped Bolin by a bumper to score a third place finish while Johnny Fennewald rounded out the top 5 finishers.

Stormy Scott started 14th but climbed to a sixth-place finish, Tommy Weder Jr. took seventh, Chase Junghans earned the eighth spot after starting 19th, Jeff Cutshaw nabbed ninth and Thomas Tillison Jr. completed the top 10.

What a difference a bumper makes. By beating Bolin to the stripe, Dotson earned enough extra points to put him on the pole for Saturday’s 75-lap, $15,000-to-win King of America Modified Nationals championship race. Shryock’s efforts earned him the outside front row tomorrow night.

Tesch will start on the inside of the second row with Whiteaker to his right. Bolin, Fennewald and Weder also earned berths in Saturday’s finale.

The top 6 in points earned through time trials, heat races and main events locked themselves into Saturday’s “A” Main Championship, along with the top 6 from Wednesday and Thursday.

All other drivers will start one of several “alphabet soup” main events on Saturday. The driver that advances the most positions throughout Saturday’s main events will earn an extra $500.

Nearly $80,000 has been earmarked for Saturday’s “A” Main alone, with a total purse of more than $130,000 posted for the four-day extravaganza. Each of the 30 drivers in the championship race will earn a minimum of $1,500.

B-Mods will also be a part of the event for the fourth straight night, racing for a stout $1,000 to win and $75 to start the “A” Main.

Pit gates open at 2 p.m., grandstands open at 3 and racing starts at 6 p.m.

The Humboldt Speedway is a located 0.1 mile west of US 169 at the Humboldt Exit, then 0.5 mile south, then 0.9 mile east on Georgia Rd. For more information call 620-431-2470 (office) or 620-473-3694 (track) or visit www.humboldtspeedway.com.
