Springfield,Mo.-Springfield Raceway kicked off the 2012 Racing season in grand style as the “Quick-Quarter” lived up to its nickname by holding the weather delayed O’Reilly Turkey Classic presented by Bad Boy Mowers under near perfect weather conditions as over 120 race temas checked in despite mid-week weather forecast.

In 2011 “Action” Jack Sullivan really struggled in the season, but the Greenbrier,Ark hotshoe came loaded to hunt Missouri Turkey honors by leading all 30 laps of an action packed Late Model feature.

After the top 8 redrew from passing points, it was Dustin Mooneyham and Sullivan in row 1 while top point car and defending event winner Justin Wells and Jesse Stovall rolled off from row 2.

At the drop of the green,Sullivan shot to the front in his GRT house car/AAA Diesel/Russell Baker Engines while Jesse”The Undertaker” Stovall followed with Terry Phillips,Wells,Mooneyham and 2011 MARS Champion Brad Looney in tow.Sullivan was wasting no time in proving that we was back in 2012 as he quickly opened-up a half a straight away advantage. With some quick paced laps,Stovall,Wells and Phillips were thrilling the crowd with side by side action as Mid-South area drivers Jon Kirby and Kyle Beard were coming forward quickly. THe first caution waved on lap 4 for Eric Tinderholt as he slowed bunching the field-up.On the restart, sullivan again rocketed forward leaving the battle for second a 3 way dog-fight.Caution waved on lap 9 as MARS champion Brad Looney slowed going on the backstretch with problems again bunching the field up.On the double-file restart,Wells got some extra bit and moved around Stovall to take second place as Philips was lurking in the shawdows as Kirby now was coming to the front runners. along with RC Whitwell. On lap 21 the leaders began to get into lapped traffic. With Sullivan holding a 7 car length lead,Wells was starting to close-up with Stovall and Phillips going back and forth. On lap 23,the race turned a different outlook as Stovall was going through lapped traffic along with Wells.Wells went around traffic in turn 2 and Stovall was in the wrong place at the wrong time and got collected-up ending his night with heavy damage. The drivers douled-up for a restart with Sullivan ready to hold off Wells and Phillips while Kirby and Whitwell had moved forward. On the restart,Brandon McCormick pulled high in turn 1 ending his night and forcing a single-file restart with 7 laps to go.Sullivan powered awayto take the $2,000 to win honors with Wells,Phillips,Kirby and Whitwell in the top 5. 14 of the 20 starters finished on the lead lap.

A Stellar field of USRA Modifieds checked-in with $1200 on the line and a first shot at USRA National Modified points. The redraw placed Brian Green and Central Missouri area champion Terry Schultz of Sedalia on the front row while Kansas City hot-shoe Tim Setzer and Lebanon top gun Jamie Ragland took row 2 and 2010 Springfield champion Mitch Keeter and high point driver Terry Phillips in rown 3.Green would bring the field down as Schultz stayed with him as Schultz tok early control. After lap 1 was completed,Green and Setzer made contact with Green going around and both going to the rear.On the restart,Schultz found Ragland on hib bumper with Keeter,Phillips and a fast moving Erik Maggard coming forward. The USRA Modifieds were thrilling the large crowd as Phillips moved around Ragland on lap 3 and gave chase to Schultz.Caution waved on lap 5 for Jim Black,2011 USRA Springfield track champion Jackie Dalton and Jessy Willard. On the restart,Phillips picked the low lane putting Ragland on the outside.Schultz in his Dale’s Towing/GRT by Phillips was wasting no time in going forward as Phillips in the Andy’s Frozen Custard/GRT by Phillips,Ragland in his East 32 Meat/Allen Autosports machine,Erik Maggard in his BAS Security/Shaw race cars and Mitch Keeter in his Mid-America Rebuilders/Hoffman racecars were swapping spots in the top 5.By lap 11,Brad Buck and a fast moving Mickey Burrell were moving into the top 5 as Schultz was keeping Phillips at bay up front.Going through lapped traffic,Schultz was with standing the Phillips challanges as the field was running without rear spoliers for this event. On lap 23 of the 30 lap feature,Schultz had something break going into turn 2 and slowed as Phillips took over the lead.In the battle for second place,Mickey Burrell was one of the fastest cars in the closing laps, but no time to run down Phillips as he grabbed the win to become the only driver to ever repeat in the Turkey Classic having the honors in the 2009 Edition for A-Mods.Burrell grabbed the runner-up spot with Maggard,Brad Buck and Ragland completing the top 5. 13 of the 20 starters finished on the lead lap.

THe B-Mods got the crowd going to start the feature events with some outstanding side by side racing action in their 20 lap feature. The redraw placed Springfield regular Andy Beauchamp and Lebanon’s Kris Jackson on the front row while former Springfield regular Sean Williams and veteran Scotty Drake in row 2 while 30 plus time winner in 2011 Shawn Strong and last years points runner-up JC Morton in row 3.On the start,Jackson who captured a feature win last season at the “Quick-Quarter” wasted no time in grabbing the lead with Beauchamp,Strong,Drake and Lebanon’s Michael Stake in the top 5.With Jackson setting a fast pace,Beauchamp and Drake battled side by side while defending event winner Jesse Sobbing was pacing himself in the top 10.On lap 5,Drake moved into the runner-up spot and began to chase Jackson while Stake was quietly moving forward in the standings. The 1st of 2 yellows waved on lap 7 as Young Logan Martin spun in turn 3 bunching the field-up.Jackson shot ahead with Drake riding the extreme top groove in second place as Morton and Sean Williams were making their way into the top 5 standings. On lap 11,the final caution waved as Jeff Miller went around in turn 4 giving the field a last shot at leader Jackson.Jackson again provedto much tonight as he pulled away as Drake now had Stake,Morton and Strong challanging as Sobbing was climbing fast.On lap 17,Stake’s strong run ended as he spun coming out of turn 4 and to the infield as the track stayed Green flag.Jackson would claim the victory and the $750 pay-day also as Drake in his GM 602 Crate motor grabbed the runner-up spot.Morton running a track spec motor crossed in third place after falling backwards early in the feature while Strong and Sobbing grabbed the top 5.17 of the 20 starters finished on the lead lap in another outstanding feature for B-Mods.

The Legends came out 22 cars strong for the feature with Justin Comer and Wayne Johnston on the front row.Johnston grabbed the opening lead with Comer and Mike Hailman in tow as 2-3 wide action was the norm for Legends.2011 track champion Dave Comer began to make a strong charge from the 8th starting spot and was running down the lead duo of leader Johnston and Hailman as Chuck Comer and youngster Caleb McDugle were charging hard. THe only caution came for Bill Cottrill and Tyler horton in turn 4 as the duo made contact.Johnston and Hailman went side by side as comer was coming quickly. After a spirited battle Hailman finall got around johnston to take the lead as comer and Johnston went wheel to wheel.Hailman got a small break and was able to pull away as Johnston and Comer kept the battle on.Hailamn went on to grab the win with Dave comer,Johnston,Caleb McDugle and Chuck Comer following.18 of the 22 staters finished on the lead lap while 2 of the new clas of Young Guns Legend drivers for kids 18 and under Kylan Garner and Wesley Smith finished on the lead lap respectively in 12th and 13th.

Up next At Springfield Raceway will be March Madness on Sat March 24th with the MLRA and MARS Super Late model Series drivers doing battle. This wil lbe the opening point event for the MLRA Late Models in 2012 with a star-studded field of Late models expected along with A-Mods,B-Mods and Midwest Modz.
