Jake Griffin Claims First Dirt Open Wheel Modified Win of 2012

DIRTcarQuincy, Illinois (06/12/12) – Just a week removed from his first career win in an Asphalt Open Wheel Modified, 13-year-old, Jake Griffin raced to his first Dirt Open Wheel Modified win of the season on Saturday night by topping a field of twenty-four competitors at Montgomery Motorsports Park (New Florence, Missouri).

On Friday night it was back to business for the team with a Weekly Racing Series Event at Hawkeye Downs Speedway (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) that also included the Keith Fleck Memorial Wall of Fame festivities. In the Asphalt Modified division he won his heat race before finishing third in the feature behind race winner, Mike Schulte, and Brian Gibson. The Late Model division also witnessed Griffin winning his heat race before racing to an eighth place finish in the main event. Jake is now in the top five in the point’ standings in both divisions. Jake enjoyed a great outing on Saturday night by charging through the field to his second feature win of the year with a triumph at Montgomery Motorsports Park (New Florence, Missouri). With twenty-four entries on hand Jake earned the eighth starting spot for the main event, and would begin working his way forward through the pack at the drop of the green flag. With just five laps remaining he bolted to the top spot, and despite a last lap caution that forced a green-white-checkered restart he would go on claim the feature win!

On Sunday evening the team concluded the three race weekend by entering the UMP Open Wheel Modified and UMP Super Late Model divisions at Quincy Raceway (Quincy, Illinois). In the UMP Open Wheel Modified division Jake began his night by charging from the seventh starting spot to a second place finish in the third heat race, which locked him into the third starting spot for the main event. In the feature he raced in the top five for the duration of the feature before crossing the finish line in fifth behind race winner, Michael Long, Steve Delonjay, Dave Wietholder, and Jared Schlipman.

The UMP Super Late Model class found Jake starting third in his heat race he charged to the heat race lead and was just half a lap from claiming the win, when the right-rear axle broke ending his night early. Full results for both divisions are available at www.QuincyRaceways.com .

In the last issued standings, which did not include this past weekend’s events, Jake is now currently second in the standings in the UMP Northwestern States Region and is 64th in the UMP National UMP standings. Full standings are available at www.UMPRacing.com .

This week, June 12th-17th, will be a busy time for the team as the look to enter six events in six days. On Tuesday, June 12th the team will be in action in the NASCAR Night at Macon Speedway (Macon, Illinois) in their Dirt Open Wheel Modified. Wednesday and Thursday night will see the team competing with their Dirt Open Wheel Modified in events that will be held in conjunction with the UMP DIRTCar Summernationals events at Brownstown Speedway (Brownstown, Indiana) and Kankakee County Speedway (Kankakee, Illinois). On Friday night at Hawkeye Downs Speedway (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) Jake will go after his second straight win at the facility as he takes part in the Open Wheel Modified and Late Model divisions. On Saturday night, the team will return to Montgomery County Speedway (Florence, Missouri) for a Weekly Racing Series Event before concluding the weekend at Quincy Raceways (Quincy, Illinois) on Sunday night.
