DIRTcar Summer Nationals(MENOMONIE, WISCONSIN) The Mars Racing team traveled to the famed Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio on June 8-9 for the 18th edition of the ‘Dirt Late Model Dream’ presented by Ferris Commercial Mowers. The crown jewel extravaganza drew 98 entrants to the 1/2-mile, high-banked venue and all eyes were focused on the hefty $100,000 winner’s check. Jimmy Mars started the weekend by posting the forty-second fastest lap during the two-round qualifying session on Friday night, which earned him a fourth row starting spot for one of the six heat races on Saturday.

When the action really heated up at the “Big E” on Saturday, Jimmy sported a bad-fast racecar in his 15-lap prelim. The Menomonie, Wisconsin ace was battling for the lead with Brian Shirley and Dale McDowell on the ninth circuit when McDowell’s #17m squeezed Mars’ #28 into the wall at the flagstand. Jimmy then went for a wild ride, as his car climbed up on the wall, went airborne, and flipped multiple times before landing at the entrance to turn one.

Jimmy thankfully emerged unscathed from the serious incident, but his MB Customs racecar was not so lucky. The team had quite a chore just to get the car loaded following the accident, which took him out of contention to advance into the 100-lap ‘Dirt Late Model Dream.’ Full results from the disappointing weekend at Eldora can be viewed online at www.eldoraspeedway.com.

“It was an unfortunate deal with what happened between myself and Dale (McDowell) at Eldora,” stated Mars today. “I haven’t been able to qualify real well at that place for the past several years, but I had a real fast racecar for the heat race. We were gaining on both (Brian) Shirley and McDowell and had a great run on the #17m off of turn four. Unfortunately, he didn’t see me to his outside and I went for a wild ride because of it. I know Dale didn’t do it on purpose, but it was a disappointing ending to what could have been a good night for us.”

Jimmy and the #28 team will look to put their Eldora experience behind them with a successful weekend at the Cedar Lake Speedway in New Richmond, Wisconsin on June 15-16. The grueling UMP Summer Nationals tour will invade CLS this weekend to sanction the annual ‘Masters.’ A $5,000 top prize will be on the line on Friday night, while the winner of Saturday’s program will receive $10,000 for their efforts.
