With one week left in the 2012 Double X Speedway Racing Season, the excitement is still at a high level. The last Sunday night program of the season produced another first time winner for the season.
The highlight of the evening was the Winged Sprint Car Feature event, presented by Xxtreme Glass. With the top four qualifiers inverted for the start of the feature, The front row was made up of Lone Jack’s Cody Baker and Bryan Grimes of Slater. Heat race winners Tyler Blank of California and Warrensburg’s Taylor Walton made up row two. At the drop of the green Baker charged into the lead with Blank, Grimes and Walton in tow. They would continue to run in this order for the first half of the race with Baker opening up as much as a half straightaway lead over the field. Baker continued leading but lapped traffic would come into play on lap fourteen. Racing into turn one, Baker chose the high line around a lapped car while Blank had closed in and took the low line through turns one and two and would take the lead heading down the back stretch. After that it was all Tyler Blank as he led the remaining eleven laps. Baker would place second, Sedalia’s TJ Muths had a good run claiming third, Grimes finished fourth and California’s Tyler Elliott posted another top five finish.
In the Cooper Racing street stocks, a storm was brewing as the “Tipton Tornado” Tim Cressley claimed the feature victory. Cressley took the lead at the drop of the green from his outside row one starting position and was not to be denied. However the racing action back in the pack made for some excitement for the fans. Tuscumbia’s Dale Berry closed on Cressley but could not mount a challenge to the leader. Berry would finish second, rookie and point leader Derek Henson of Russellville placed third, Fulton’s Cole Graves finished fourth and Andrew Roark of Henley rounded out the top five. Heat races were won by Berry and Roark.
The Double X Hobby Stocks took to the track for their main event and produced a new face in victory lane. Windsor’s Chuck Coffey put his #171 machine into victory lane Sunday night. It was no cake walk though as perennial hard charger and heat winner Sedalia’s Will Register would hound Coffey for the duration of the feature event. California’s AJ WIrts would chase the lead pair home in third, Rudy Wirts also of California claimed fourth and PJ Grimes of Sedalia rounded out the top five. Eldon’s rookie driver Laura Atkinson completed the field after having to bow out due to mechanical problems.
The fourth division on the card were the 600cc Micro Sprints. With several new drivers on hand, the front rows of the feature line up were stacked with previous feature winners. Eugene’s Corey Nelson started on the pole and that was the only spot he needed as he took the lead on lap one and held off early challenges from previous feature winners Ryan Marsch of Jefferson City and Columbia’s Dean Hathman. Hathman would ultimately follow Nelson across the line in second, Marsch would claim third. Scott Hathman of Columbia finished fourth and Houstonia’s Steven Townsend rounded out the top five. Heat races were claimed by Dean Hathman and Marsch.
The Double-X season will wind up next Saturday night. After the final feature event the point champions will be recognized and various awards will be presented. Powder puffs and mechanics races will follow the award ceremony. For more information call 573-796-4694 or visit www.xxspeedway.com.
