USMTS ‘Hunters’ hit the road for five-race Labor Day Weekend

(Aug. 27) – Less than halfway through the 18-race Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s Cup, the battle to become the next USMTS champion heats up this week as the drivers and teams hit the road for five days of guts and glory during the Labor Day Weekend.

Rodney Sanders of Happy, Texas, has used his 4 wins, 23 top-fives and 27 top-ten finishes in 28 starts to surpass Ryan Gustin in the USMTS Casey’s Cup Series points standings. Now a father of a new baby boy as of Friday, Gustin is just 14 points behind Sanders while Stormy Scott lurks in third.

Fourth through tenth in the rankings are Jason Hughes, Johnny Scott, Bryan Rowland, Zack VanderBeek, Jeremy Payne, Dereck Ramirez and nine-time USMTS national champion Kelly Shryock.

Other top names in the world of open-wheel dirt Modified racing expected this weekend include Daniel Hilsabeck, Jason Cummins, Al Hejna, Corey Dripps, Jason Krohn, Austin Siebert, Jon Tesch, Joey Jensen, Ryan Ruter, Mike Steensma , Doug Hillson, Mark Noble, Jason Miller, Adam Hensel, Pat Graham, Dean Mahlstedt, Brandon Beckendorf, Willy Kraft, Dan Bohr, Josh Angst, Eric Dailey, Steve Wetzstein, Mark Teske, Lucas Schott, Nate Wasmund, Jimmy Broszeit, Bob Timm, Jake Timm, Brandon Davis, Mike Sorensen and more.

Each of the five events in Southern Minnesota along I-90 will carry a $3,000 top prize for the winner of the Swan Energy “A” Main.

The swing begins Wednesday, Aug. 29, at the Fairmont Raceway and then heads to the Jackson Speedway. Promoters Gary Jacobsen and Jon McCorkell have teamed up to offer fans a special $25 ticket to attend both shows. The $25 two-day pass will be available at the ticket window in Fairmont.

As part of this blockbuster doubleheader, the Iron Man Challenge featuring USRA Stock Cars and USRA B-Mods will compete both nights with Stock Cars racing for $1,000 to win and B-Mods for $700 to win each night. Gates open at 5 p.m. with hot laps at 7 and racing at 7:30 both nights.

Jeremy Payne and his #186 SLAP Energy Modified will be at the Casey’s General Store located at 2237 State St. in Fairmont from 12-2 p.m. Wednesday. Coupons good for $2 off admission can be found in Fairmont Welcome, Trimont and Truman locations.

Al Hejna and his #7 Snickers Modified will be at the Casey’s General Store at 603 3rd St. in Jackson from 12-2 p.m. on Thursday. While you’re there, pick up $2-off grandstand tickets for that night’s show.

Friday will find the series at Darin Toot’s Chateau Raceway in Lansing, Minn., for the 7th Annual Cedar River Race where the 1/3-mile semi-banked clay oval always provides for exciting side-by-side racing from the drop of the first green flag to the final checkered flag.

Gates open at 5 p.m. with hot laps at 7 and racing at 7:30. Also racing Friday night will be WISSOTA Midwest Mods, Street Stocks and Pure Stocks.

Al Hejna will gain be meeting and greeting fans from 12-2 p.m. at the 1702 12th St. SW Casey’s General Store in Austin on Friday. Coupons good for $2 off admission can be found in Austin, Blooming Prairie and Mantorville locations.

On Saturday, Sept. 1, the USMTS Modifieds will tackle the popular Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley for the 8th Annual BP Labor Day Duel presented by Baudoin Oil. The event will pit the Best of the Best Modified drivers in the nation against arguably the toughest field of weekly racers on the planet.

In addition, the Cornbelt Clash Late Models will be racing. Midwest Mods and Street Stocks will round out the racing card. Grandstands gates open at 3 p.m. with $1 beer, pop and hot dogs available from 3-4 p.m. Races start at 5.

Fans can meet and greet Jason Cummins and see his #71 Cheetos Modified from 12-2 p.m. Saturday at the Casey’s General Store located at 875 Hwy. 52 N in Preston. Coupons good for $2 off admission can be found in Austin, Blooming Prairie, Owatonna, Rochester and Stewartville locations.

On the fifth day, Sunday will be anything but a time for relaxing as a full program of events is on tap at the Dodge County Speedway. Sunday’s 11th Annual Kasson Klash will be the 29th occasion that the USMTS Modifieds have taken the green flag at the Kasson speedplant.

Gates open at 4 p.m. and hot laps are at 5:30 with racing at 6 p.m. B-Mods and Street Stocks are also on tap for Sunday’s show.

Jeremy Payne will be at the Casey’s General Store located at 214 State St N in West Concord from 12-2 p.m. Sunday. Coupons good for $2 off admission can be found in Owatonna, West Concord and Zumbrota locations.
