KNOXVILLE RACEWAY, Knoxville, IA, April 28, 2013 – Dylan Smith of Osceola, Nebraska won the 2nd Annual Knoxville Shootout for Modifieds for the second year in a row.  Other feature winners included Austin Kaplan in the Sport Mods, Lance Borgman in the Stock Cars and Mike Hughes in the Hobby Stocks.

Jacob Murray paced the Modified field early in their 25-lap feature.  Dylan Smith worked his way forward from outside row four and worked by Jordan Grabouski for second on lap eight.  A restart on lap ten allowed him to dive under Murray for a lead he would never relinquish.

“I knew I was better on the bottom,” said Smith of his winning move on the restart.  “The track had some holes in turn two, but I was getting off of it pretty well.  The restart helped a ton.”

Austin Kaplan of Des Moines took the lead from Mitch Van Engen on a lap two restart, and never looked back to claim the Sport Mod feature.  Glenn Gladson Jr. came from row four to second, and Carter VanDenBerg was third.

“I’ve gotten second way too many times here,” said Kaplan in Victory Lane.  “Now I have a win.  We kept getting cautions, and I thought, ‘Here we go again.’  We finally got it.  I’m happy!”

The 20-lap Stock Car feature went non-stop and the action up front was intense.  Joe Zadina led the first half of the race before David Brandies scraped by him literally, on the backstretch.  Meanwhile, Lance Borgman from Osceola, Nebraska stuck his nose into the fray and made his winning pass with three circuits remaining.

“We took advantage of cars getting squirrely and stuff and moved our way up,” said Borgman.  “It was a heck of a race.  I was thinking I was going to get second, but they opened the door just a little bit.  We got lucky there.”

Four lead changes highlighted the 15-lap Hobby Stock A main won by Mike Hughes of Oskaloosa.  Hughes took the lead on lap two from Corey Madden, only to be overtaken in a duel with Bill Bonnett.  With three laps to go, the two made contact, and Bonnett’s left front tire started deflating.  Hughes led the last four laps.

“(Bonnett) was really tough on the bottom,” said Hughes.  “I was trying to roll the top.  He got a little loose on the bottom, and I was able to capitalize on the backstretch.  Anytime you win here, it’s a good win.”

Slideways Karting Center/Pella Printing Night is coming up this Saturday, May 4.  All three sprint car divisions will be in action.  For more information, visit www.KnoxvilleRaceway.com!
