Quad City SpeedwayBy Anthony Sandoval
The first night of points racing at the Quad City Speedway comes with a lot of flair. Even when lights flare out.

On lap five of the UMP Modified race, the lights went out, causing a five-minute delay. After that, it was back to racing, and what notable finishes there were.

UMP Modifieds: It was the same story, but a different week for Milo Veloz Jr. Last year’s UMP track champ took Car V to victory lane in the first heat and the feature. Though last week’s win wasn’t a points race, this time it counted in the standings. Donovan Lodge finished second in the main event. T.D. Burger, “The Psycho” from Pontiac, won the second heat race.

Mike Mosher was the winner in time trials with a 14.35-second lap.

Eriksen Chevrolet Buick IMCA late models: Ray Guss Jr. got the lucky draw. He pulled the slip reading the No 1 for the feature event. In the 25-lap feature had Guss Jr. go to victory lane for the second time on the weekend. He also won over in Davenport in the Petersen Plumbing & Heating feature.

“It was one of those nights to get lucky and draw the one,” Guss Jr said. “Like last week, I don’t we would have won from tenth. It was a tough go out there, so you had to take advantage of your good starting position.”

It wasn’t a nice go around for the No. 46 car of Nate Beuseling and the No. 390 of Rob Toland. Toland, last week’s feature winner, came off the second turn a little hot and hooked Beuseling into the back stretch wall on lap 5. Toland and Guss Jr. battled for the lead for the first three laps. Mike Zemo Jr. challenged Guss Jr., toward the end of the race, but settled for a third-place finish.

“I was trying different lines,” Guss Jr. said. “In front, it’s hard to know where the best line is when you’re out front. Somebody in second can search. I tried some different things to get comfortable.”

Zemo and Sean Mulvany took the heat races. Todd Malmstrom finished fourth in the feature.
