Night number two at Double-X Speedway was fast paced and full of excitement. With lightning in the western sky, Sunday Night Thunder saw close racing and exciting finishes. The Street Stock feature event provided fans with a finish that had them on their feet. Defending point champion Derek Henson looked to have things figured out running the low line consistently hitting his marks. However things were shaping up to be exciting as another former track champion Harlan “Boy” Dowell was running the high line and came up to take the lead at the line on lap 11. Henson edged back in front for lap 12 before Dowell would lead laps 13 and 14. With Henson on the low side and Dowell on the top the pair entered turn 3 side by side. Dowell’s car pushed a little in the middle of 3 and 4 allowing Henson to edge him at the finish line for his first victory of 2013 at Double-X. Dowell earned a hard fought second, sliding across the finish line, Curt Turpin finished a solid third, Dylan Bias claimed fourth. Last week’s feature winner Andrew Roark was fifth and Keeth Strange completed the field. The heat race victory was claimed by Henson. Point leaders are Roark 174, Henson 172, Turpin 164, K. Strange 92, Joe Miller 91.

When the 360 Winged Sprint Cars took to the track, the field was led to the green by heat race winners Taylor Walton and Tyler Blank. Both had very convincing wins in their respective heat races and Walton was still riding high for the weekend having claimed a non wing feature win on Saturday night. Blank put his #75 GF-1 Chassis machine on the cushion and moved out to a comfortable lead with Walton and Cody Baker in tow. As Blank continued to lead the field the action was heating up back in the field. Bryan Grimes and Kevin Whitworth were having a good battle for 5th place and Evan Martin joined in the fray with the trio battling hard for several laps. A lap 18 caution for Cody Baker bunched the field back up. Blank led Walton and Grimes to the restart, with Blank still on the cushion, Grimes worked the bottom groove to get by Walton for second on lap 19 and moved by Blank to take the lead on lap 23. Grimes led the remaining two laps to capture the feature victory. Blank would claim second, Evan Martin was third, TJ Muths came home fourth and Kevin Whitworth brought the Jack Hockett Racing #77 home in fifth spot. Rounding out the top ten were Tyler Elliott, Cody Baker, Taylor Walton, Casey Baker and Lanny Carpenter. Top five in points are Blank 184, Grimes 166, Martin 160, Carpenter 138, Baker 136.

The 600cc Micro Sprints were again on the card and Columbia’s Dean Hathman claimed his second feature win of 2013 at Double-X. Hathman was chased for the entire 15 laps by Cole Campbell who took the checkered in second, holding off a strong run by Corey Nelson who came home third, Kyle Schlotz was fourth, Ryan Marsch was fifth. Scott Hathman finished sixth and Nick Schaefer finished seventh. The heat race was claimed by Dean Hathman. The speedway does not keep points for this division.

Not be outdone by the other classes, The Hobby Stock feature had some very close racing as well. Last weeks feature winner Seth Jacobs took the lead from his outside front row starting position with Chuck Coffey and Will Register right on his bumper. Jacobs would continue to lead until lap 10 when Register moved to the point and would not be headed. Jacobs settled for second, Coffey was third, AJ Wirts was fourth, Kurtis Pace came home fifth, Mike Schrader sixth and Laura Atkinson in seventh. Point leaders are Jacobs 186, Wirts and Coffey are tied in second place with 174 points each, Register 160, Schrader 152.

Be sure to join us next Sunday night for our Tribute to Jesse Hockett as the ASCS Warrior stars will take to the track with the street stocks and hobby stocks. Also in competition will be the Mid America Lightning Sprints. Gates open at 5:00, Hot laps at 7;00, racing at 7:30.
